Bill Gillespie Benches 711 Lbs at WABDL Worlds

Bill Gillespie, 275, bench pressed 711 pounds on Thursday at the WABDL World Championships which are ongoing through Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bench press is a WABDL Masters 47-53 World Record, surpassing Roger Ryan's 650 pounds from earlier this year. It also ranks Gillespie sixteenth on the multi ply Powerlifting Watch Lifter Rankings. Here is video of the lift.

Beautiful LIFT !! Congratulations Bill !!
great to see the video so soon !

And Jon I know that because WABDL does allow double denim, you list it as a multi ply fed. But I think Bill, and a majority of WABDL lifters are in Titan Katana single ply shirts and the Rage category single ply Inzer shirts..Gus even covered that fact in the lifters meeting..I know that doesn't change the category here...but just an FYI

good to see an actual pause before the press command. impressive bench.

Bill is a true class act. Congrats on your lifting.

Bill IS a class act, but IMO, that was a no-lift. His right hand dipped at the top before the, "rack" command. (The audio isn't off either, as he pressed right after the, "press" command.) You can hear (someone) encouraging him to, "lockitlockitlockit", just as the HJ gives the, "rack" command.

I've seen UPA judges hold Luyando et al much longer at the top. (Just in case someone thinks I think the only good judging is in the USAPL.)

A great effort.

Great job Bill!!

Pause? What pause. This was a touch and go and wouldn't get a single white light in the IPF. Good job though, regardless. Bill is a class act.

Good work Bill. Remember the old ADFPA days

Bill,

My girlfriend and I sat beside you on a plane out of Las Vegas yesterday. Great to see the video of you in action (I tracked this down based on the info you gave us about your competition). You are a classy guy as well. Best of luck in the future.

GREAT Lift Bill

How much more of a pause do you need? Jesus Christ don't hang the dude out to dry...

JimRay... I see what you're saying, but to me it looks like he was completely locked out and tipping off the bench, which would be different then dipping the weight from strength failure or completely not locking it out. I'm pretty sure if he was completely locked out and swaying side to side as minor as it was, it's not a red lightable offense.

I loved the lift... good job Bill

Putt Houston.... now with more Bom Chicka Wahwahhhhhh

I have to also agree that looked good and the pause was plenty long I thought the bar had to just stop motionless on the chest and it did. Nice lift very strong. Master Power, Ken Ufford

There is no such thing as a touch and go bench in the IPF. There is no rule for pausing the bench. If the lifter gets the press command he can go. Know the rules before you lord over the lifting world.

I agree with Putt. Good lift all the way. How old is Bill now anyway? Has he hit 50 yet?

Any news on Butchie "The Bench Beast" Zemittis in the 198's.

he waited for the press command, and at the top he rolled somewhat, but didn't dip. Great lift.

My only problem is with the platform: too small. When spotters have to go looking for a secure place to stand, then that's a safety risk. Don't want them keeling over (or breaking an ankle) when spotting a big lift.

Bill,
Thanks for your friendship and company.
We had a great time in Vegas with you and
Phil. We had faith in you from the get!
Thanks for being a big part of our

Pause??? It was resting on his chest long enough for a camp site and a wennie roast! Get a clue or laser eye surgury! Great job Bill! There will always be haters. Bill is the Randy Couture of Powerlifting(49 years young). Odd Haugen(57) and
Jamie Moyer of the World Champion Phillies are some more greats over 45 too!!!!!

It was a great pause, but c'mon about the LOCKOUT...that was clearly not locked out what so ever at the top.

Putt, I didn't see any instability on his left side. I just don't think he exhibited control at the top. As always, judging is hard and no one is perfect.

Congratulation Bill!

Great job Bill, I agree with Putt, I believe he was tipping off the bench. Bill are you sure you are in the master 2 catagory?

Congrats Bill. I didn't want that record anymore anyway. LOL. Bill gave 772 two good rides after that opener. Lookin' forward to hittin' the platform with Bill again.

As a lifter myself I don't understand why people can't just say "Good Job" Does'nt everyone know Bill got three White lights!!! NOT TWO.. The only light that was red was only for a sec. Because the judge on the left said he did not hear the rack comand.. Then he changed it to white after asking "was rack given"?? I love this sport because of the support I get from even guys I don't know! Lets remember that...

Bill-
Congrats!! I am so proud of you and miss training w/ you. Great Lift. I know God will continue to bless you. Your friend,
Blaine
