Donnie Thompson's 1,200 lb Squat Attempt

Here's video of Donnie Thompson, shw, missing his third attempt squat of 1,200 pounds at the IPA Power Station Pro-Am on Sunday. Thompson also missed his first two attempts of 1,080 and 1,160 pounds so was unable to complete the meet. Thompson holds the all-time highest total of 2,850 pounds, which included a 1,155 pound squat.

This makes Mike miller 1200 look like atg...

Why was that no lift? It's lower than what passes for depth in most federations, even the "top" ones@

Now I don't know what the other two lifts looked like. His lifts in the BPC looked quick, explosive and easy, but that one he did look like he struggled some. That being said, the strength is there and after bombing out of 3 of his last 4 meets, why wouldn't he lower the box in training and learn his depth properly. I just don't get it?? It's not like he traveled all the way to Ohio simply to "tune up" his squat, he can do that in the gym. I really hope he does something big at the IPA Worlds in November.

From what I heard from people who participated in that meet, Donnie doesn't use anyone to call him up. He is amazing, and the best lifter ever, but I don't see why he wouldn't use someone to call his depth. He always squats to depth in training- you can tell that by his videos... but adding weight after you miss a lift, then adding more to determine whether you stay in the meet isn't the best idea I've ever heard...

He'll come back and get it next time, no worries.

Real close Donnie. You'll get it next time

Donnie was there to get help on his squat form. He wasn't even planning on benching. He got some great tips on his foot placement and how to find the right spot in the hole.

Its very difficult to be the only one critiquing your own form in the gym so I know Donnie was really happy with how things went at the ProAm. He's saving it all for a bigger meet in the near future. But the way he put it was, where else can he go where some of the greatest powerlifting minds are there to watch him squat and give him tips?

Man they stole that from him. That was deep enough, jesus wtf do they want to hear his ass hit is calfs. What a rip off! Best of luck in the future donnie. YOu need to find a new fed though man if the judging is going to be that bad.

why not just go to westside and get critiqued for free?? I don't really understand that reasoning at all???

what bigger meet is there these days than the pro am?? I don't undesrand this at all. it really just sounds like he is saving his WR total attempt at a meet that won't be as big so the judging isn't as good.

a video of his WR total never did surface......

oh my gosh guise, then it must have never happened, oh my gosh guise i guess all the lifts that happened in history that werent filmed never happened, oh my gosh guise they should all be questioned, guise.

Damn, if he could just get those last couple (read: 6) inches he'd have hit parallel.

I love following Donnie's lifting, but this attempt was crazy. It sort of shows you what's wrong with powerlifting when guys are having a harder time getting down than they are getting up. Getting UP from a squat is supposed to be the hardest part.

As a counter, if you haven't already done so, watch AJ Roberts squat. Believe it or not, it is possible to squat with a wide stance and sink one.

Deep enough??!?!? WTF! Do you lift in the 'Mile high club'?

Good luck to Donnie at his nxt meet. Class act.

There is video of the lifts on www.bodytechusa.com

I wonder why donnie switched from poly to canvas it doesn't make much sense for someone who has trouble hitting depth.

what the heck? who edited my name into the post questioning whether or not there was video of Donnie?

*also I should add, Donnie knew this wasn't deep enough. He felt he was losing it so rather than keep going down he just came up with it. He couldn't get comfotable in the hole

Did you look at the opening attempts for bench and deadlift? Im not sure but they looked like token lifts to me. And anyone who competes knows that squatting in the gym is nothing like squatting in a meet. Especially a meet where Louie and Rick are both watching you squat and can give you pointers

Donnie is a very nice guy and someone with tremendous power. It is just a matter of a touch more work in full gear and he will nail a goofy big squat number in my opinion.

Man oh man that is awesome. I want who ever said that was good to be my judges in a meet. Id never miss a lift again, lol. Well I think perhaps he rushed it a bit with the clock counting down and having to get going before the reds. I do have a question though do you have to lock the hips before you start to squat because his hips were no wear near locked out. He started already a 1/4 of the way down.

I also don't think Donnie should have been given reds. He's a big man who hits this sort of weight in training all the time. If you don't think he deserved to get whites, watch him train and you'll change your mind. Just to prove it, he WILL get it next time anyway and that will be that. That was a deep squat for a big man.

Donnie Thompson is a very strong lifter. He proved that at the NERB two years ago. And even though im a USAPL lifter, im gonna give credit to these judges for red lighting this squat. It wasnt even close. Im sure Donnie dosent need everyone here saying it was sooo close, because it wasnt, and even he knows that. It was high, get over it.

A lot of people train hard, does that mean they should get whites in a meet? This video proves what powerlifting has become. Now im sure ill get bashed for this and people will say "youll never come close to this" and "his squat is probably more than your total" and thats fine. But id rather squat 700 deep and leave no doubt than do a quarter knee bend that is no better than any other gym rat does and calls a squat. OUT

Enough said, I was there front row sitting with the person who puts out the $$$$. Donnie did not break parallel in which the rules indicated. As a matter of fact I was next to Bott. NO GIFTS WERE GIVEN AT THIS MEET, no matter who you were.

Donnie will prove the haters wrong very soon. This is as deep as Donnie can go. If you have big quads you know what I am talking about. Any deeper amd Big Don would be sitting on the floor and I can't recall seeing that requirement in any fed's rulebook.

So Donnie bombed out of meets. I love the little troll who admonished Donnie to "try finishing a meet". I can't speak for Donnie and I don;t know why he picked the attemnpts he did. That said I am sure he didn't go to the meet witht he intention to bomb. I read an interview of Gary Frank once after he set the WR total. In it, he said that he was trying to push the WR higher every meet after. I understand that mentality. I mean does Donnie Thompson really need more trophies to tell him he's a hugely strong lifter? I doubt it. Does he feel a need to please people like "the lad" ? I seriously doubt that one too. In the end we train as hard as we can and try to push ourselves as far as we can every meet. To me this is what lifting is all about, not crash-dieting after scanning the competition so you can take home a little medal or trophy. All you over-compensating, insecure, pricks who don't get this can kiss my ass for all I care.

Good luck Donnie at your next meet and keep pushing.

I wish Jon would consider removing some of the hater's posts. These guys couldn't even stand up with half this much weight yet they criticize the guy for getting a pretty darn good squat turned down. If it had of been passed (as it should have), they would have another littany of complaints.

...yeah. The debate ended on the depth even his camp thinks/knows it was high.

Dude are you serious, because he is big it's OK to squat high! Matt Smith seems to have no problem getting to depth and that is a pretty damn big guy. Matter of fact just shut-up, sounds like you have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Donnie bombed end of story and he was not close to parallel either visual evidence is there. The Powerstation Pro/Am is the top event now and they are holding lifters accountable to standards. I feel they hand picked the best damn judging crew and they are totally impartial.

LOL this thread is nuts! You guys are going to pieces over a squat that got RED LIGHTS

Here is what I do not understand, if you watch the video, when its done there are several below it, one is an attempt by Chuck V that for the life of me I cannot see any reason for being turned down, yet it got two reds. From what I saw, are they kidding me??

DDonnie is the best lifter out there. He proved it with squat and he proves it in the gym on a daily basis. He will get the call on a different day with different judges. Donnie is the king!

saying the lift was not deep enough is not hating. If it was, then all referees are haters for daring to give that lift a red light.

If you cant differentiate saying a lift is high from insulting a lifter, then pErhaps you should buy some tampax

Kirk Karwaski didnt seem to have problems with depth and his quads were prob bigger than Donnies. Nobody here is hating on Donnie, we are all stating opinions that most people seem to agree on. I feel like in the past that would have been 3 white lights so hopefully the judging is gonna help powerlifting somewhat respectable again.

This thread is momentous. It represents a sea change in the trolling tactics of anonymous posters.
