Unofficial IPA Pro-Am Reports

(updated 8/25 8:04 am)

Unofficial reports are coming in from this weekend's IPA Power Station Pro-Am in Sharonville, Ohio. Sergiy Naleykin, 198, won the best lightweight lifter (198 and below) award and the $5,000 that went along with it. Naleykin totalled 2,460 pounds for the second highest total in 198 class history, only ten pounds behind Shawn Frankl. Frankl was unable to compete in the full meet due to a hamstring injury, taking token lifts. However, he did push his all-time bench press record up to 850 pounds in the bench only competition.

Brian Schwab finished second and Michael Cartinian placed third in the lightweight division.

In the heavyweight division (220 and over), Greg Panora won the $5,000 for being named the best lifter. Panora also pushed his 242 class all-time record total up from 2,600 to 2,625 pounds.

Michael Cartinian set a new 181 class all-time record with a 2,235 pound total. His effort surpasses the mark of 2,230 set by Brad Vargason.

Laura Phelps-Sweatt broke the 165 class all-time total and bench press records with a 1,715 pound total and 455 pound press. The old bench press record of 451 pounds was held by Kara Bohigian-Smith. Phelps-Sweatt held the previous total record at 1,650 pounds.

Chuck Fought set the new standard for the 308 class with an all-time record total of 2,670 pounds. Fought surpassed Paul Childress' 2,662 pound total.

I actually weighed in at 243.5 and was just too lazy to continue cutting so technically I was a 275er LOL. I'm such a fatty

Shawn's 850 was really a very sick bench.

I'm pretty sure Coker hit 805 on bench

Drex hit 740 if I'm not mistaken

Richie didn't have the day he wanted but the guy is a really great bencher and will come back to hit much bigger numbers

Al Caslow went 820-540-685 for a 2045 @165, and Brian Schwab went 825-605-615 also totalling 2045 @165. It was a helluva battle.

so who won?

Brian actually weighed in at 159, technically beating Al Caslow. He also placed 2nd in the lightweight division by coefficient.

Laura Phelps-Sweatt 700/465/560 @ 165, she had some of the cleanest benching ive seen!

Was Cartinian really a 181?

congratulations travis on the 700

YES. he took the alltime total record

So if Schwab finished 2nd in the lights, that likely means that Sergiy took 1st, probably over 2400?

sergey went 2460

adam driggers 925 squat, 600 bench and 680 dl 2205 total

I totally agree. The IPA meets in Ohio have become more strict in the last 2 years than any federation in the country. Mainly on the Squat because that was the biggest complaint. The judges are very non-biased and from different federations. I was proud to watch the guys today. Everyone obviously trained hard for this meet. My only regret is not completing myself due to work. I really don't know how or why people choose to bash it or make negative statements. They should come to the meet and tell the lifters to thier faces that they aren't credible and see how long thier opinion is spoken.

Congrats Brian! 825 is awesome!

What was Cartinian's WR total? His dead isn't listed at the top.

Who the hell is Joe Riddle? BTW, how did Nate and Matt Burke do?

Sergiy squatted 970, and I'm pretty sure that Cartinian pulled 660.

Thanks AJ! I was really happy. Things went really well for me at this meet. I look forward to improving my technique and putting up some more respectable numbers

I know that frankl took a ~150lb squat...sure he didnt do the full meet? I had to leave.

Jason
www.prowriststraps.com

frankl took a 135 squat

Frankl is totally in a league of his own. I can't even imagine what 850 feels like at 198. Bone crushing I imagine. Freakin huge congrats to all the lifters for pushing some serious weight.

Hey Schwabby and Big Al, wicked totals damn fine liftin' !

Sergiy, Holy shitskyov...you're a fuckin' monster, dude !

Laura Phelps-Sweatt, ya' mind if I "borrow" your total ? And, have you hit 5 bills yet ? Someone let me know.

Peace

the judging was strict, I was spotting and didnt see any gifts given

198's have had a pretty crazy weekend, with Andrey Belyaev putting up 2260 in single ply and Sergiy Naleykin putting up 2460 in multi, both of which are completely out of this world. Look for these guys, and these guys alone, to shatter their own records in the future in 198!

~D.M.

These guys alone? Frankl should be closing in on a 2600 total soon, as he already has a 1000+ squat and now an 850 bench under his belt.

HUH? These guys alone? Is Frankl retiring? Great Job Shawn! Congrats to everyone who competed. Sounds like it was/is another great meet.

only the strong survive

Hey anonymous loser who said does the fed Count, have you lifted in the IPA? I have and they follow the rules to the letter just as tight as when I was in USPF. drugs and multi-ply are the same in any Fed so that is not why their lifters are better than the rest. The best go to the IPA because they put up the money that lifters deserve. That is why they are the best Fed and why the best lifters lift there!

But hardly any of the lifters make any money. Also, nobody lifts at IPA meets nationally (its a highly regional fed). This meet is a big draw becuase 1) Louie puts it on and 2) Louie created it to take the place of the WPO when KK pissed him off. So it is filling the shoes of the WPO which is now defunct. Simple as that. It really has nothing to do with the fed, more with Louie, the timing of the meet after the fuck up that was the WPO, and that caliber of the lifters it has attracted.

But isn't that how you build a federation? I agree that the IPA is highly regional, their nationals are hardly competitive. It takes meets like this, that are competitive, attract top lifters, are well run, and get a lot of publicity to take a fed from a regional one to more of a national one. Louie throwing his name and resources behind some IPA meets can fast-track that process a bit. That being said, I'd say that there really isn't a single competitive federation currently that is nationwide, most are pretty regional.

Agreed. But somebody in the IPA needs to take the reigns and make it spread nationally. Right now the APF still has the most meets nationally but it leads to what? Seniors? Then Seniors leads to what? Nothing really. It used to be the gateway to something else now it just is.

If the IPA could match its judging at Louie meet to theirs others (doubtful in certain areas) and spread nationally this meet could be the elite of multi-ply nationally and internationally. It already is, but it could be so much bigger if somebody wanted to do the work and Louie and his family tree (Elite, Lexen, Supertraining, shit half of multiply lifters in the States really) supported them and the fed wholeheartedly.

I am suprised when people talk about all the feds this has never been brought up. There will always be a ton of feds, but with the ProAm as the crown jewel of big time meets I see no reason why the IPA couldn't be the premiere fed.

I thought the topic was about updates on the IPA PRO AM not a debate about how the fed works, which is the top fed, etc. Can at least one forum be about the meets and not everything else.

Probably not. Theres usually always somebody that goes off topic completely. I'm sure by the time this thread comes to an end there will have been debates about the upcoming presidential election, Britney Spears, Inzer & Kennelly, skim milk, raw vs gear, and a hint of racism thrown in the mix somewhere along the way.

So if they are so great then why are there NO UPDATES from them. All you need is a laptop and an Internet connection.

That name didn't apply from what I saw at this meet last year...and there's plenty of video from that meet btw.

I'm hearing that there were quite a few squat bombs today and the squat judging was very strict.

Any word on Vogelphol?

Read on outlaw that he bombed on squat. Can anyone confirm this?

Anyone know how Chris Taylor and John Bernor did?

Bernor didn't compete, he ran into some injuries leading up to the meet.

chuck did bomb on squats as did donnie and many others

They all bombed on depth

What did Panora do?

Anonymous wrote:

Not true. Vogelpohl sat back to far on all 3 of his attempts and fell backwards. If youve ever seen him lift, this is the ONL:Y way he ever misses. He squats to depth

Jason

Pretty terrible coverage going on for such a big meet going on. Pathetic really. Can no one update the site with results from today as they happen?

Any info on the guys from EFS? Kroc, Jackass, AJ, etc?

Nr. 2 in the lightweight division almost got outpulled by a GIRL in his own weightclass!!!!!

Thats some strong girl.........

Anonymous wrote:
What did Panora do?

1055 squat, 770 bench and an 800 pull.

Greg took the heavies

Kroc took token squats and benches and went for an 810? pull which he got

Donnie wasn't even planning on benching at the meet. He wanted to tune up his squat while he had the eyes of some of the worlds best coaches on him at once. He's more getting ready for IPA Nationals

Talked to Chris Taylor a lil while ago,,He totaled 2290 at 242...Also heard Fought set the all time 308 total at around 2675,awesome,,God bless

in His grip forever

Since Schwab went 3 for 3 on the deadlift it's obvious he played it safe to get the tie and win by bodyweight. 55 lbs. isn't almost close. It's amazing that you can try to find fault in someone who just tied for the 2nd highest all time total at 165.

...does anyone know what Chuck Fought pulled? thanks

Fought pulled 875

875!!!! that's great! thanks

what happened to Jeremy Frey

John Bernor,

I am interested in discussing a few things whith you and CT. Could you send me an e-mail at obrnpwrlftr@safe-mail.net.

Thanks

who won the 275's ?

The judging was very inconsistent.

This crap with the judges tapping Louie Simmon's leg when his lifter is low enough in the squat needs to stop. That is a huge advantage over there competitors.

I agree that a side judge giving the leg tap is BS unless it is done for all lifters. I don't think westside is the only culprit though.

jeremy Frey squat 940 bench 740 deadlift 770 total 2450

275 class Dave Hoff 930 squat 780 bench 800 dead total 2510 luke edwards squat 1000 bench 680 dead 770. Sergiy kamavkhow squat 1035 bench 595 dead 790.total 2420 lukes total 2450.

Chris Taylor had an awesome day. I had the pleasure of coaching him today and it was inspiring to watch him lift. His numbers were

860 squat
750 bench(this was rediculously easy, I would say he had 800 in him)
680 deadlift (his first 700 was in his reach today. I wanted him to try 700 but he played it safe and smoked 680 to add to the PR total he had after his 2nd deadlift.)

All together he was 8 for 9 and set PRs in the bench and total at his 242 bwt.

CT, great job buddy!

Any lifter has the option to have his coach get a tap from the side judge..some use it and some dont, but they all have the option to do so. Its not just Westside or any any other particular group that gets it.

Dude wake the fuck up.....EVERYONE can get that tap.....weather or not you ask to get it or not is you or your handlers choice. I dont lift at westside and I got it...plus about 80% of all the other lifters in the whole meet...your just a hater cause you squat like 500

Rich how did you do?

2025

Holy shit? what was the breakdown

Everyone had that option and many used it, others did not. Their choice.

Judging was tight

Travis, good job. Wish I was there to see it but both my kids had scrimmages.

760

660

thanks for askin pete!

Anyone know what weight Chuck V. tried on squats? Also, what were Chuck Fought's squat and bench? Also, how'd Wenning do?

Man, there was some great deadlifting going on at this meet! Seriously, that must have been awesome to watch live.

It was an insane meet. chuck fought squated like 1080? not sure bench a lil over 7 then did that crazy ass dead.....it broke the total record that matt w.. broke prolly 5 minutes earlier. the place went ape shit both times....and chuck v miss all attempts at 1120.....

Pete Sengos wrote:

Thanks Pete! I'm sure I'll see you at another meet soon.

Matt Wenning I believe went 1080, 815 and 765. Don't quote me on that exactly but I do know that he beat the old all time total and then Chuck Fought came behind him and took it even higher with his deadlift. It was really intense

Wenning: 1085/815/765=2665
Fought: 1080/720/875=2675

Wenning had top squat and bench in the meet.

I think he did indeed have the highest squat but he didn't have the highest bench

Frankl had an 850 bench I believe...

There was not a bench-only division in this meet, it was all full power with exhibition benchers. Frankl took a token squat but I haven't seen that he took a deadlift.

AJ WENT 935 705 705. HE IS A PERSONAL FRIEND OF MINE. HE TOLD ME THIS EARLY JUST HAD AN OFF MEET.

RYAN RIGDON

How did Sam Byrd do ?

Yo dip shit Bob Youngs....the side jugde...the one that was rite beside the lifters.....he informed EVERYONE rite before each flight about it......have you never lifted in an IPA meet before...did you just think that bob or jon was hookin everyone up by tapin them? wake the fuck up dude. Im guessin you were there today(fat man day) so Im guessin ur dude bombed....quit bein a douche and live and learn.

AWESOME POWERLIFTING COMPETITION!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED.

also, the judging of john bott and bob youngs was very very tight and consistant but always fair.

Steve Wrikles wrote:

Didnt get a squat in

Did wenning pull a token deadlift?

Anonymous wrote:

the tap was available for anyone who asked for it, and it was made clear that it was as such before squats.

Wenning pulled 765

Greg Panora is THE MAN !
He is totally unhuman with the barbell!!!!

Sam tried 1050 3 times. I think he got the second attempt but was red lighted on depth. Seemed like an off day.

Chuck opened with 1120 missed twice and tried 1160 I think.

Donnie opened with 1080 then I think went 11 something and 3rd was 1200...

some answers to questions...chuck v and sam byrd both bombed on squats. they were both very close, but as everyone said previously judging was very tight and fair.
as for wenning pulling a token deadlift. i do not think so. his deadlift set a new wr in the 308 lb class until the very next and final lift chuck fought broke that wr. both are studs that you will hear alot about in the future. great meet...great venue.... hats off to westside barbell and everyone involved in this meet. cant wait till next year.

chuck v took 1120 and fell backwards then took 1120 and they said at the top he fell in the rack after the rack command which i have video and i dont know what they are talking about then took 1165 for a ride and fell backwards half way up matt wenning went 9 for 9 1085/815/765 for 2665 total and chuck fought went 8 for 9 he gave 1150 a ride but just didnt have it he hit 1080/715/875 for 2670 expect huge things outta these guys cause they had gas left in the tank

its only gonna get better for team xtreme congrats guys

I am not a multi ply lifter and I really hate to hear about all these big guns bombing. That being said, I get particularly interested when I hear Fought and Wenning are competeing. These two are the same weight class, train at the same gym and consistently put up pretty huge numbers. It's great to hear both of them did so well and that 875 deadlift is just ridiculous!!!
