Great training footage!!

Definitely, reverse band bench press is another great max effort exercise. I wish I could have done this a few years earlier.

Reverse bands with blue's and mini's? Wouldn't that give you and unrealistic sense of your capabilities when going in to a meet? Hell he's stronger that me, maybe this is the secret.

SHOCK THE SYSTEM!!!!!!!

I see one pretty good bencher coming on.

Otherwise, I hear one skinny stick in a bench shirt with a seventies style afro shouting louder than the rest and saying "fuck" more than anyone else because he doesn't get enough attention at home.
And guys, saying "fuck" and "butt fuckers" doesn't impress anyone.

Get rid of the cheerleader(s) and hangers; and c'mon, start chalking your own hands. Is it really that hard?

Great work Joey. Thats great wrok your doing. Good seeing you healthy again. Good luck.

The way I see using reverse bands is just like using high boards. It allows one to handle heavier weights to help shock the lifters CNS whils working on lockout power. I dont beleive he is thinking he can bench 1005 only that he was able to get to a one rep 1 board max on this particular lift which is still impressive.

Agreed. No coaching is going on just a bunch of cheerleaders and hangers. They actually clapped for him after one attempt lol. These Joey Smith videos are always very entertaining.

The dude holding your board is annoying as fuck, tell him to cut his hair and get off your nuts. Nice lifting tho.

IT'S JOEY TIME!!!!!!!!! Did The Stick call Joey papi??

Nice work Joey...Strong.

Sounds like a Joey Hater in the making. A lifter is training hard and his training partners are supporting him and thats funny. Let me guess your a fat ass nobody sitting at home never lifted in your life whos wife cheats on him and his children dont respect so you feel better about yourself bashing others on the internet because your a feeble minded individual? Makes sense to me. Hell your intertaining due to your stupidity.

im just sayin, if sumone was in my face like that yelling at the top of their lungs the whole time every lift, id be like shut the fuck up.

Good lifting Joey.

Good work Joey! Keep training hard!

Good thing no one gives a shit what you think or say- and I'm sure we can add Joey to the "no one" category...

Great lifting man- when's your next meet? I'd say you've at least got 825 in you from the past few weeks of videos I've seen!

I dont care what anyone says thats one strong guy and I think its great the way his guys support him. I read his log on elite and he (Joey) give thanks and praise to each of his training partners each week. I think thats cool.

Keith, you hit the nail right on the head. Joey gives love to everyone that contributes, no matter how big or how small. In his eyes, any contribution and/or willingness to learn is the first step to becoming great. Although he is very modest about everything he does in the gym, he is an amazing and accomplished lifter- even more so that he hasn't been doing this that long.

I will say this- this is only the beginning. He training is just starting to take off, and he has just recently gotten into the groove he's been missing ever since he about ripped his shoulder out of joint in Daytona a year ago... Big lifts and big things will be coming from Mr. Smith, just be on the lookout. Once this happens, all the haters will be forced to do nothing but stick their foot in their mouths. Any attention is good attention- and he will take it that way. He thrives off of people hating and doubting him- so keep it coming.

Very soon, that's all you need to know.. and you will see that Joey has become one, if not THE, most accomplished lifter in NC.

I see some broken forearms in his future. But cool vids though.

Good job Joey and team! To the judgmental busybodies commenting crap on Joey's team, who cares if Joey's team style wouldn't work for you. It obviously works for Joey and that's what counts for him!

As far as the "stick" comments about the guy helping and encouraging him, how many of you didn't start somewhere? Don't act stupid. The smaller guy is obviously a good team mate to have in his corner! Probably an up and comer himself in a lighter weight class. This is great!

Way to have a supportive team with you Joey. That helps the workouts. Good luck to you and your team in the future!

Awesome training footage. Strong benching!

Respect from Holland.

The thing I really like about Joey is that he talks about and gives props to his training partners. I have never seen the other North Carolina lifters post pics, vids or even referance to anyone else but themselves in their logs on Elite.

I agree on this one. Joey, you can see the bar position is below the elbow(even to a board). This barpath full press will either dump hard or break your arm.

Lookin' strong, but I think maybe reverse band, shirted, board presses might be messing up your barpath. IMO. Good luck.

I agree with Roger here you can clearly see an unnatural bar path in these videos....looks like a lot of stress on the forearms the chances of you being able to duplicate this in a contest is very unlikely and very dangerous

Wow, never would I had thought a training video would start such a stir from, My teammates are goons and stupid, I m going to break my arm, there is no coaching going on, my teammates are also annoying, I am creating an unrealistic sense of my strength. Well this is a training video, my team is coaching me. You can obviously hear the verbal ques I am looking to hear during my attempts. Also I don’t think I can bench 1005 straight up. I am overloading my CNS just like with chains, high boards, resistance band training or in this case reverse band presses. For some of you smarter than me people that seem to be out there, I get tips and training guidance from some very established bench pressers. I guess their stupid too. My bar path is the same on non-board to chest presses as well. And yes I do not use a belt. This is what works for me. This works for Joey Smith. There is nothing in stone that says you must do this or you must do that. I have changed allot of bad habits over the past few months to try and hone my skills. What I do now works. I have allot of people to thank for that. I’m not sure who some of you guys are that are smashing on me but if your bench skills are so superior show me how its done. Then I can learn from yall. Other wise this is how I do things from others that know more than me that have helped me to where I am. Also my team is great. They cheer me; hell I cheer them as well. I clap for their PR's as well as they do for mine. Is that wrong? Fuck no. Support is over looked. Camaraderie is overlooked as well. No one can go far in anything in life by himself or herself. My good friend Brian whom you guys seem to like to talk shit about is like my brother. This is guy is dedicated and hungry to learn. He may not be the strongest guy in the gym but does that make him lesser a man? No it don’t. I wish I could meet some of you dickheads that like to shit all over people you don’t know. I guess since we don’t know whom half you pussies are it really don’t matter. I am lucky enough to have great people around me and to train with. I have great people who call me and give me advice all the time. I am fortunate to be in the position I am in. For each of you that may not like that.... fuck you. I do not mind criticism but I do not take to people criticizing my good friends and training partners. Thanks for the supporters whom have commented and thanks to those who support me in general. I have not been around long but I have allot to accomplish. Thanks to my team.

If you google Roger Ryan I think you'll find that he's a 700 plus bencher at over 50 years of age so I would think he knows what he's talking about. Now I'm no eliter bencher by any stretch but I do OK in full meets, lifetime drug free at age 42 and I agree that you're not getting your elbows underneath your wrists. The bands, let alone your spotter, are controlling the groove of the bar. I spotted a forearm break not too long ago and it's not pretty.

Some of us here are trying to help. Don't take it so personal. Way too many fragile egos in this sport. Again, I'm not a 700 lb bencher but many years ago I spotted a flaw in an elite lifter's sumo pull and he said it was the best advice he'd ever received. At the time I was 18 years old barely hitting a class I total. You can still learn from those not as strong as you.

Pete,

Look I don’t mind help. I love to get helpful advice. If you read what I posted again I plainly stated that I don’t mind criticism towards me. You can teach me a flaw I am appreciative. What has me pissed is what you need to read again is the slams on my teammates. I can’t stand for that. There’s no sense in it. These people don’t know the guys I train with or what they are about. My ego is not fragile by any means bro. There you go thinking you know someone as well. I don’t mind the help but don’t make quick judgments on my team or me. I don’t know you and I will not do that towards you. I am no better than anyone. And trust me I learn plenty from people that are not as strong as me. Each and every week I learn from seven guys who are not stronger than me. There you go again assuming knowledge you are not aware of. I thank you for the heads up on your opinion about my forearms. I will pay particular attention to that as well as my team. One more thing my spotter is not leading the bar. He is close but as we said No Hands. Its better to be safe than stupid with 1005. Trust me I listen to those who will be helpful, but assumptions and lack of knowledge about my team or me will get negative replies back.

You have to admit that Slash is pretty entertaining but you're wasting way too much time being pissed off about what other people think. Don't let the negative posters occupy space in your head and you won't feel compelled to defend your training partners and yourself.

Good luck with your training.

Good to see you makin' it happen as always Joey, also, find me next time ur thinkin' about doin' a big comp overseas and need some coin. Seall
