IPA Power Station Pro-Am Roster

(updated 8/21)

Westside Barbell has published an updated roster of the pro lifters who will be competing in the IPA Power Station Pro-Am which will be held August 22-24 in Sharonville, Ohio. Lifters will compete in one of two divisions: Lightweights (198 & down) or Heavyweights (220 & up).

Up for grabs will be $5,000 to the winner of each division, as determined by Schwartz formula. An additional $1,000 will be awarded to the lifters with the best squat, bench press, and deadlift, as determined by formula. Finally, $100 per lifter will be put into a jackpot and awarded to the Champion of Champions. Currently, that pot sits at $5,700. Sponsors of the event include AtLarge Nutrition and APT among others.

Arguably the most prestigious multi ply contest of the year, 57 of the world's top powerlifters are slated to go head to head. Only a handful of the top men's lifters who are not injured, are not scheduled to compete. The most notable include Andy Bolton, Chad Aichs, Oleksandr Kutcher, Phil Harrington, Scott Yard, and Ano Turtiainen. Evgen Yarymbash, who was signed up for the contest, has pulled out.

How much of the $13,000 is actually from the ipa budget? $4,100 comes from the lifters pocket.

Shawn Frankyl will take the light weight division. Donnie Thompson will take the Heavy weight division.

I really like how all the weight classes have some real depth to them. THIS is where powerlifting needs to be! Reminds me of the old days when the USPF and APF Seniors were basically the only two national meets where the best US lifters came to compete.

I thought byrd has been doing other meets to prep for this one?

and what the hell is kutcher up to? if he competed, he might have a chance to beat frankyl

there are going to be some records set... who gets the squat record in the 275...chuck or yarbash?

donnie will bomb. he won't get the gifts he got in the last one bc the last one wasnt ran by westside like this one is and the first one was. the last one was a just an ipa meet basically with ipa calls

I am going 220 not 242. Driggers, Carroll, and Schwanke will be competing.

Hell not if you going into them 220's Clinton, I fear the wrath of the Chinstrap and the Fohawk! :)

www.tampabarbell.com

Oh Yarymbash is a beast! I want to see him take a 1200 squat!!!!!

Sponsored by APT Pro Gear

Eric Talmant will be going raw on day one as well. He is set to pull mid-upper 6's raw @165

Team Samson has completely banned any future fohawks.

Is this an ipa or louie simmon meet? If this meet is louie simmon, it should be called westside barbell powerstation pro-am, not ipa.

It is an IPA meet promoted and sponsored by Westside Barbell. Louie SimmonS is involved in promotion, organizing, and running the meet (although I don't think he is the meet director).

I will be there. I will be going 181 not 198...

Jason Coker

wow, this looks like its going to be a great event.

Adam Driggers wrote:

Thats fine- Ryan seacrest has a fohawk. I have a chinstraphawk

This is an IPA meet. Louie is a sponsor and promoter of the meet. Mike Ferguson is the owner of the Powerstation Gym and is the meet director and is running the meet. Westside has nothing to do with the actual operation of the meet. It is going to be one hell of a show. The venue is the Sharonville Convention Center, which is over 10,000 sq ft--double the space from last year's venue, which we really needed.

How is the schwartz formula figured?

I will be there at 220, i sent in my entry yesterday.

Clint, i was diggin the hawk man. i have started growin a patch right in the front of my forehead im gonna mold into a horn... its the only place i can still grow any, the rest is fallin out and re-attaching to my back! haha

This is 10% Luck, 20% Skill, 15% Concentrated Power of Will... 5% Pleasure, 50% Pain, and 100% Reason to Remember the Name!

The Powerstation crew is the most helpful best group of people you will ever meet. I am lucky to know them and thankful they go to all the trouble to do a meet like this. It has to be a ton of work for little reward to do such a large meet.
Thanks Mike F and crew.

This is for Jason Coker:

Why 181? Your lifts at 198 are just incredible, so why not stay there?

Best of luck at whatever bodyweight!

Sam Byrd! Creator of the "Horny Hawk"! LOL! Good luck Sam!

Jason Coker

good idea brad! thanks jason

It would be incredible if Yarymbash AND Vogelpohl both hit 1200 or more in the squat at 275. I'm pretty sure at least one of them will regardless.

Also, I thought Wenning was a 308?

Yarymbash FTW

sean "the freak" frankl(198) will smoke the lightweights and please, Jim Grandick(242) has some unfinshed business, he will not lay down. Be prpaired for the craziest meet! numbers and records will fall. Coker will destroy the 181 bench record............

greg is going 242 and nobody will come within 100lbs

and yes wenning is a 308..

looks like a frickin all-star meet good lord

To me, this illustrates why the IPA, and not the UPA, is the premier multi-ply, untested PLing fed in America. The APF is 2nd. The UPA is the top multi-ply, untested BP fed.

Jim, I've got to agree with you. The IPA ProAM August of last year as well as the one in January both attracted an incredible amount of the best guys out there and generated the kind of excitement that the Arnold used to.

On another note, it's a real shame that Vlad Alhazov is injured (any word on how he's doing?), as he would have obliterated the squat record and would have probably finished with something unreal in the deadlift.

panora is going 242's as i am told , this meet is the ultimate showdown i cant wait to watch !

Al Caslow called in today and confirmed his entry. The battle at 165 will be something else now.

$100 says Laura Phelps will have the highest squat in the 165's.

Man that 242 class is SICK!!...Also I got to disagree to the poster who said the judging at the IPA pro am in January was lack. It was not it was one of the hardest judged multiply meets I have seen. Vlads record squat at that meet was of quality depth! And many big name lifters bombed in the squat in both the AM and Pro days. Also I believe it took Big Don until his 3rd attempt to get a squat passed on depth that day.

I'm surprised not to see Mike Griffin 275 from Texas and Jose Garcia not doing this meet. I lifted against them the at APF seniors and those guys are ANIMAL"S unreal strong.

I am so excited for this meet! It is going to be AWESOME! The best of the best! This is what powerlifting is all about in my book.

Tony Bologne

Is that actually pronounced like I think it is... if so thats awsome :D

This looks like a sick meet. Cant wait to check out the results.

That's a bad azz looking line up right there!

That's a lot of prize money for powerlifting too. Kudos to the promoter for raising that kind of scrilla.

I was hoping to see Kara Bohigian Smith go against Amy Weisberger in the 148s. Kara's still training, right?

Hopefully they get some quality video of this event because the deadlifts seriously will be fun to watch.

Mark Bell is doing this meet. He's been talking about it in his log on elite and calling for a 2600 total...

Could this be the comp where we see a 275 lifter hit 10xbw?!

This Is Going To be A Big Time Freak Show , the only thing we need is the big screen that replays your attempt ! like at the arnold

Im going 181 for a great friend of mine!! I also want to see what kind of numbers I can hit after a crazy weight drop oh yea I almost forgot I would like to try to get the 181 all time bench record!!! Maybe I can pull 405 if I am skinnier!LOL

Patty and I will be there courtesy of Ron Fernando, of Westside Barbell. Ron will povide our beer and wings for the weekend. Ron Fernando is a damned nice guy!

This meet showed why powerlifting has such a bad name. Squat depth was terrible, soft hand offs on the benches with uneven lockouts and deadlifts given with knees not locked, and we all know none of those lifts would have passed if IPF judges were...uh wait...my bad...the meet hasn't happened yet. Dammit! It's tough to be anonymous poster sometimes :-(

BOY THIS SOUNDS ALOT LIKE A POST THE PIMPLES CHAMP WOULD PUT UP AFTER THE RESULTS OF THIS MEET GET POSTED.

the head judge for this meet if an IPF cat 3 judge they dont get ne better than that all these judges were paid and hand picked by louie simmons

That lineup is sick! The results are going to look made-up the numbers are going to be so high.

John Bernor will be lifting @308. He is too humble and will never talk about numbers. My prediction:

If he totals, he wins. :)

Yes and no. These things have a regional slant. The IPA is the premier multiply fed in PA/OH/KY. It sounds like the UPA is running some great meet in the midwest. But the APF is still THE freak show in the Southeast. I think it just comes down to where there are active state chairs and other meet directors that consistently put together good meets- guys like Jon Groves, Brant Bishop, Kieren Kidder, Wayen Pullem (sp?), and Buddy McKee have kept the APF an exciting place to compete down here. Some of the state/local meets (e.g. this years's APF SE Intermurals, APF Southern States) look a lot like a nationals meet with the level of talent that they draw. These are meets where you can count on good equipment on the platform and in the warmup area, good spotting, and fair judging.

Al Caslow is going 165. 2000+

Damn, the numbers from this one are going to be flat-out freaky!!
Can't wait to see the deads!

does anyone know why matt smith is not on roster? i thought he would be putting up some crazy numbers.

this is by far the best quality 2-ply meet since the demise of the WPO

Anonymous wrote:

No such thing as IPF cat 3. Only IPF Cat I and IPF Cat II - with Cat I being the higher rank.

Joe M

Look for Jeremy Frey to open some eyes in the 242 class

the 242 class is one BITCH of a class by far one of the toughest i am told panora is shooting for the 2700 mark at 242

Matt Smith damaged his neck doing rack pulls. i heard it was a broken vertebre or something in is lower neck.

This is 10% Luck, 20% Skill, 15% Concentrated Power of Will... 5% Pleasure, 50% Pain, and 100% Reason to Remember the Name!

anyone know what the sunday line-up will consist of ? which lifters, which lifts ?

sunday is the heavyweight class, 220s and up, full power

Damn that sucks. I really like Matt! He was cool as hell at the seminar he held at your gym. Last year he remembered me from it and bs'ed with me before he lifted.

thanks for the info on matt smith big byrd. that sucks for him. he is a great lifter to watch compete. good luck to you big byrd. i am sure you are going to do some crazy things to open some eyes at the meet. take care. look forward to watching.

i keep looking for a more stacked weight class than another but they're all tough as shit. shold be some incredible battles going on.

small is a state of mind - Derek Wilcox

Actually I'd disagree. Other than this what other IPA events are there? IPA nationals and Worlds are nothing special. THey just threw IPA on a Pro event.

Agree. IPA is a east coast federation. IPA's National and World meets are local east coast lifters with backyard rules. One Pro event that just uses the IPA stamp to make the lifts count will not make the IPA the top of the multi feds. The IPA is no where near the top of the multi feds. I would say APF, UPA, APA and then may be IPA.

Is Darren M. gonna be in this one ? I don't wanna see him catch yet, ANOTHER suspension. Ya' gotta feel for the dude.

On a side note, I'm announcing the beginning of my own fed, it's tentatively going to be called the...QWAFJLYB. That's Quit Whining About Feds, Just Lift, Ya' Biotches !

Like Forest Gump said,"That's awl I got ta' say about thayat ".

Peace

Mike White at 308 - ?

Might surprise some people !

This might be the sickest line up we've seen in years!

Putt Houston.... now with more Bom Chicka Wahwahhhhhh

This is awesome!!!

Good luck to JASON COKER who kicked ass at the Superlifting Pro Bench last weekend in Dallas!!!

Jason has stiff competition in the 181's. All the lifters are tops. Angelo Berardinelli is a veteran that keeps putting up big numbers. Let's hope Jason doesn't pass out from back to back meets and going 181 from 198.

Good luck to all the competitors. This is great for the sport of powerlifting!!!

Sam, I spoke with him. He actually got the injury at work. He will have to have surgery. He should be good to go after the surgery. I wish him the best.
