APF Holds Single Ply High School Nationals

DicksSportingGoods.com

WPC President Mike Sweeney reports that last weekend's inaugural APF High School Nationals held in in Baton Rouge, Louisiana was a huge success. Garry Frank organized the team competition which was host to 188 lifters and eight different high schools. Alexandria Senior High from Alexandria, Louisiana won both the boys and girls events. Interestingly, lifters competed in single ply gear.

Sweeney:

I just got of the phone with Garry Frank. This past weekend Garry made APF history by having the most successful APF Teenage National competition the APF has ever had in Baton Rouge LA. The APF has always had a National Teenage division combined with Master Nationals, but the small turnout of teenagers were always over shadowed by the much larger number of Master lifters. The difference with Garry's meet was it's emphasis was on team competition that emulated Texas/Louisiana H.S. competition structure. Single ply gear only. Individuals were allowed to lift, but they still had to represent their school. There were eight high schools with large teams from Texas/Louisiana, along with a handful of individuals that totaled 188 teen lifters. All of these teams have winning traditions with multiple State Championships in their states class structure(4-A / 5-A). Garry said there were still 30-40 kids who didn't come either because of spring sports, or weren't sure about lifting in a first time event. He was still beyond ecstatic with 188 lifters for the first time. These kids are ridiculously strong according Garry. Girls who squatted over 400, boys routinely squatting in the mid 600's, and a few 700's too. He said these kids squat rock bottom in single ply gear to boot. Even a couple of 165-pounders were deadlifting in the mid 500's. No doubt huge iron high school lifting to say the least! These kids are the strongest H.S. lifters in the nation.

Garry said he will have detailed results that will include all the schools that participated, plus some fantastic pictures in a matter of days. I asked him who won the team titles. He said a school called Alexandria Senior High(aka. A.S.H.) from Alexandria Louisiana won both the boys/girls first ever APF High School National National Championship. A.S.H is one of the most decorated teams in Louisiana/National H.S. Powerlifting history. With 30 State Titles and 23 National Championships to back it up prior to this contest. Make it 24 now! Great job Alexandria Senior High!

Last the feedback has been so positive that Garry foresees going from a 2 platform contest to a 4 platform contest next year. His phone has been ringing all day with thank you's from the coaches/lifters. The coaches said their lifters haven't stopped talking about the APF experience since they got home. That the kids that didn't make it to the meet are kicking themselves for not going after they saw their teammates awesome medals and Championship Cups for the Top 3 Boys/Girls teams. I bet those Championship Cups are going to look pretty sweet in those schools trophy cases. Garry went all out. He feels confident that he will have 15-20 teams at next years APF High School Nationals. Phenomenal job Garry. Congratulations!

Could the lifters wear more than single ply? Hopefully the APF will offer single ply lifting at all of their meets from now on.

This a positive step for the APF, but also for powerlifting in general. If we can expose kids to a positive powerlifting experience in the high school level maybe they will carry that on and continue to compete.

Although the USAPL also has teen powerlifting championships(and has for years) they seem to have trouble retaining those lifters when they get to college and after.

No excuses! Just lift it!

This meet was awesome man! I had the privalege of announcing it and it was a great experience for me to see so much enthusiasm and spirit by each team displayed by the lifters, coaches and parents! Garry and Hardcore did a great job with all of the little details that make a meet work so well. Everything was well thought out and top notch! All the lifter orders were projected from the computer onto 2 giant screens for each platform so everybody knew exactly when they were up at all times. This made the announcing very fun and easy. I just read it off the screen as it came up. Hunter did a great job with the computer and scoring! It was great seeing all of the parents, family and friend that came to support there schools and lifters. It was near capacity crowd both days! The red, white and blue USA theme backdrop was awe inspiring with a central entry door at the center of the two platforms. The pics from this meet will be breathtaking I'm sure. Great job Garry and Teresa Frank and all the guys of Hardcore Barbell on maybe the most awesome meet I've ever seen!

Congrats, KEEP THE SPORT GROWING!!

Yes, I will agree on all counts that this was an awesome meet. I was able to judge the two day event along with five others. The spotter/loaders were to say the least, the best I have ever seen. This group not only spot/loaded for two straight days, all day, they set up and took down the equipment for the meet and also helped handle the kids with equipment and wraps.

Between lifts I had the chance to mingle with the parents and grandparents. Their enthusiasm and interest has truly sparked something in me for this sport and the APF for life. As judges we were communicating with the lifters and coaches as to why red lights were given and how to correct the infraction for the next lift. The parents made numerous comments about how judges were taking the time with their kids in this way.
They had never experienced this before.

These kids are the future of the sport we all love. After watching the pureness of the sport in these kids faces it really makes most of the petty arguments between feds and other lifters seem so trivial. I truly hope we adults can bring some of the fun and enjoyment back into the sport that I saw this weekend. It would do us older folks some good to begin feeding off the optimism in the spirits of our young people instead of being bogged down with negative attitudes of the older, bitter lifters of yesteryear.

I encourage all lifters if you can arrange your schedules to get involved with or attend a High School meet to do so. It will fire you up and change your life, it had mine.

They do already. In fact, at my first meet a few years ago, I lifted in a single ply Titan suit.

Not sure on this specific meet, but the APF/AAPF does not offer a single ply division. You certainly can wear single ply gear, however.

...just a note that single ply will be the "RULE" at the APF H.S. National only(not across the board), and if a teen wants to wear multi-ply-gear, they can do so at Gary Franks' APF National Master/Teeen/Junior Competition on May 3rd-4th in Baton Rouge. Thank You

Rule changes in the best interest of those competing in the APF High School Nationals were:
-single ply gear only
-no canvas or denim gear
-no split back bench shirts
The changes are specific to this annual event only. There will not be similar divisions in other APF meets.

Positive comments previously posted are consistent with my perspectives judging the event.

Thanks to Garry and Teresa Frank and the Hardcore Barbell club. Your hard work created a positive opportunity for significant growth in the APF.

More is in the works.

Thanks,

Great step in the right direction. I agree on the Single-ply division for high schoolers whole heartedly.
Great move for the APF.
Congratulations to everyone who made the decisions and made it all possible.

You lift today, sleep tonight, eat tommarow and live Forever.

I've lifted in the LHSPLA

And there's something about ASH that just stands out. They aren't lying when they say "routine 600 pound squats"

Anyways, the rules are correct. I hope it stays that way because there is nothing worse than changing the rules.

Did they use a monolift?

Monolifts were used on both platforms. The backdrops were airbrushed patriotic themes behind both platforms for Nationals. Platform 1 had a red monolift. Garry bought a new blue monolift for platform 2 specifically for this event. The combination looked great. The lifters had the option of using the monolift as a monolift but 99%+ made the right decision in that the treated the monolift like a power rack, walked it out, and lifted like they trained. The less than 1% that used it as a monolift didn't have any apparent advantage considering the fact that the schools that won or placed high had all lifters walking the weight out. We'll continue to use monolifts at APF High School Nationals so other than the previously listed rule changes specific to the event there won't be any other differences versus all other APF meets. I expect the lifter usage rate as a monolift will continue to stay very low though in that all schools either use power racks or jack stands and walk the weight out.

Why not adapt to what the schools are using for the HS Nats and go with standard racks? Why go to the trouble of bringing in monolifts if only 1% actually use them as intended?

What is wrong with using the big Power racks for meets of any age or group other than you must walk out the squats??? It is safer....

Monolifts will continue as the standard in the APF. Many of the high-school lifters expressed an interest in continuing to lift with them. Using them at the High School Nationals meet didn't compromise the performance of any lifter yet didn't give any lifter an advantage. Using them also didn't compromise the safety of any lifter (excellent spotting and solid/stable elevated platforms). We're hopeful there will be eventual carryover from High-School Nationals of lifters choosing to continue in APF meets. Giving them an initial exposure to the monolifts helps them know what to expect if they choose to move forward in the APF. As for why go to the trouble, bringing monolifts and setting them up was insignificant versus overall efforts put into the meet.

This is a great thing for the sport of powerlifting. Me and Jon Grove have talked about getting this started in Ga. We think it will help introduce the sport we love to a new up and coming group of lifters. Great gob and huge turn out. Congrats Garry! Give Jon Grove a call I'm sure he would love to here how you got all the schools involved.
