Gold Medalist Tony Cardella's IPF Worlds

Tony Cardella, America's lone gold medalist at the IPF Powerlifting World Championships in Soelden, Austria, recaps his World Championships. Cardella includes a link to video of his lifts. He also encourages lifters from other federations to come forward to help make a stronger U.S. team.

I had a great time at the 2007 IPF World Powerlifting Championships in Solden, Austria. The venue was nice and filled up just about every day, especially later in the week. The equipment was top notch (ER Equipment, Eleiko). The platforms could have been better. The warmup room was cramped, but we made the best of it. I don't think anyone had a problem getting their warmups in, it just wasn't very spacious.

I had a good day going 8 for 9, setting two PRs, and tieing the American Total Record in the 125kg class. My individual numbers were:
SQ 390 kg
BP 265 kg
DL 367.5 kg
---------------
Total 1022.5 kg

I think we had some left in the tank in the squat and deadlift. I've struggled in the bench as of late and made a stupid mistake on my third bench with 272.5 kg. Missing an attempt because you pick your head up is a lame rule and should be changed. That won't happen again.

Other highlights of the meet for me included Dave Ricks' 3rd attempt deadlift to beat out Jan Weigera (POL) for the bronze medal. Even after missing it on his second attempt. Brad Gillingham's 3rd attempt deadlift and masters world record total was impressive. Brad and myself provided the last 1-2 punch needed to lift the US Men's team to a second place finish over the Ukrainian and Polish powerlifting teams. The Russians were impressive as always. They are all technically sound lifters, brutally strong, and extremely well coached.

It's very exciting to have finally won an IPF World Powerlifting Championship. It's been a long time coming. I've gone to 3 IPF Junior Worlds, 1 World Games, and 7 IPF Open Worlds. I'm very stoked to be the first American since Kirk Karwoski (1996) to win the 125kg class.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me out along the way both from the beginning in '95 through the last training cycle.

Thanks to the US coaching staff (Sherman Ledford, Larry Maile, James Townsend, and Ivan Ribic). They did an excellent job both before and during the meet. They picked the right attempts. Especially at the end of the meet. That was the right call at the right time.

A special thanks for everyone that trains with me at Steel Fitness (Mike Dorman, Steve Rosenberg, Charlie Turco, Bill Eaton, Robert Muellener, Roweena Lopez, and Cameron). Now that I'm a World Champion like Christy ya'll will listen to me. LOL!

A big thanks to Brandon over at Inzer Advance Designs. He really came through in a pinch during this training cycle. If you haven't tried a TRX squat suit or Fusion deadlift suit, I highly recommend them. They are without a doubt the best suits I've used in competition.

Thanks to Sherman at Quest Nutrition for his help with supplements and bench press training. Quest makes some great stuff. I lived off the Quest Whey 44 for awhile and it mixes great with Tang, JSF 5500, and ice. No outrageous claims, just big gains!

Thanks to Doc and his staff at Helton Chiropractic. They did a good job of putting me back together when things weren't working right. I appreciate Doc putting in the extra time to come up with some new ideas to help fix and strengthen problem areas. It's amazing what a difference that has made.

Last but not least, thanks to Christy Newman. Not only is she the best bench presser I ever saw, she's one hell of a photographer, a good travelling companion, and the best girlfriend I ever had.

Full results of the meet are available here:

One last thing, if you or someone you know thinks they can do a better job on the US Men's team, I'd like to encourage you to give it a shot. Get qualified for the 2008 USAPL Men's National Powerlifting Championships in Texas and come compete. A strong US Powerlifting Team is something I think we all want.

No excuses! Just lift it!

Jon, is it just my misperception or do you put a lot more items, interviews and meet recaps on here from IPF World than the other 'major' World Championships WPC, GPC, and WABDL? If I'm observing correctly; what is the reason. It seems sometime that 1/2 of the topics brought over are IPF related. Just curious. I agree they should get as much press as anyone but no more than the other 'majors'.

mastermonster- i think its because, u never really see a wpo meet or anything outside the usa often- ipf worlds are all over the world every year.

Tony- way to bring that gold home to america brother, that was some phenomenal lifting, though id have to say u have to put some more weight on the bar for those squats and deads

Buddy-

It's accurate to say the IPF Worlds, along with the WPO Finals and IPA Pro event, etc. receive more press than other major events. Check out the WPO Finals from earlier this year to see coverage which rivalled the IPF Worlds.

The simplest reason for this is there is more information available. From lifter training leading up to the event, real-time coverage of the meet, video from the event, and write-ups after the event.

For instance, the GPC Worlds were held last week and the WPC Worlds held this week are almost completely absent of any information. Heck, the results for the WABDL Worlds took weeks to even surface last year. Major raw events also receive short shrift in this regard.

A second factor is that most of the best single ply lifters lift in the IPF Worlds. Whereas, most of the best multi ply lifters lift in the WPO or IPA Pro event. That makes the GPC, WPC, and IPA Worlds somewhat less important from the perspective of covering the nations top lifters.

I think a final factor in play is the support the GPC and WPC receive from American lifters. Their attendance depends upon the location of the Championships. That's not so of the IPF Worlds. Since Powerlfting Watch primarily serves North American powerlifting, the events from that perspective become less important. As an example, check out how many Americans are lifting this week at the WPC Worlds.

More generally, the IPF does, far and away, the best job of disseminating information and is more open with information sharing. In contrast, multi ply lifting does a better job of sharing meet video.

I'm always looking for information from all sectors of powerlifting. If you or anyone else has noteworthy news, just email it to me, or write it up and submit it here.

"No excuses! Just lift it!" Is this "catch phrase" starting to get annoying to anybody else besides myself?

lol god u hate the ipf so much

ipf has the only legitimate world championships. of course they are going to get more pres than any other championship.

GPC is hardly a "major" federation, especially in the US. WABDL doesn't even squat so that makes them automaticallly secondary on a POWERLIFTING site.

the only major contests now are the IPF worlds, WPO (until it finally dies... which is coming), and the IPA pro/ams that are now being done. everything else is way below at this point

Outstanding day Tony! I got the privledge of seeing Tony compete in St. Louis, my God is this guy strong. Keep up the good work.

With regard to mr. cardella's request that lifters join in the ipf teams, been there, done that, and not going back. Not unless some sanity returns, in a clear and noticeable fashion. With the latest jury bs, doesn't look like it's coming anyday soon!

Life is too short to deal with the IPF!

Well, it reads like you enjoy your bitterness a little too much. Hope you find your PL happiness somewhere....

Whats to bet htat former IPF lifter is actually former USAPL lifter and never made it to IPF level, got all bitter and left.

FOrmeripflifter

....or maybe ur just too weak to lift in the ipf.....

Thats funny-- out loud funny
Everyone knows the strongest are APF/AAPF

No excuses! Just lift it!

No excuses! Just lift it! Is a phrase I use when we're training. Especially with new guys who aren't used to being pushed...but if it annoyed your anonymous as*...I'm glad I used it here too!

i like the phrase mastermonster lololololol!!!!

My buddy says whatever it takes, i say get the weight up no matter what, so all the same....no excuses just lift it!!!!!!!

Mastermonster,
Isn't that phrase a little ironic when it comes to your lifting and the lifting of your "idols?"

So the WPO are not the strongest?
