So shocking, its ashame. My thoughts and prayers will be going out to his family. RIP Jesse.

That is terrible news, it is very sad to see strongmen die so young.

George

Poor guy, I wonder what the cause of death was.

Wow...here today, gone tomorrow...and so young too. You never know when your number is about to come up. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

deepest condolences to his family, regardless of what brought about his death.

one would hope that otherwise he had done the necessary doctor's exams to be sure he wasn't unfortunate enough to inherit things like aortic rupture potentials, getting an xray would screen for that one generally and ANYBODY who hasn't had that done should consider it as a GOOD PRECAUTION.

it's also possible the other things one does to compete at that level may have brought this about, steroids being a possibility and to not wonder that is to be naive as hell, unfortunately.

the saddest part is some people like jesse and johnny perry go away all too soon, leaving us wondering what they might have accomplished and grieving families. they were clearly very gifted people.

the surprise is there aren't more breaking down or dying in that sport given the extreme conditions (like 100 degree heat) and other madness brought on by the choice of locations by the meet promoters!

One way of looking at it is that he died doing what he loved, the love of the iron and strength. A true brother of iron. period.

RIP J

Putt Houston.... now with more Bom Chicka Wahwahhhhhh

We lost a true American Strongman to soon. May he rest in peace.

At 27 years old as good as he was he would've been a real dominant force for years. It is very sad.

A friend sent me this link through email. I am not powerlifter by nature, but I knew very well who was Jesse Marunde, I watched his competition in the world strongest man. God help all his friends and family to overcome this sadness.

He will truly be missed, I have known him for a few years and he was a great ambassador for the sport.
And I would think out of respect for his family, the steroid talk would stay out of this. Right now they just need everyones thoughts and prayers.
For the record, he was 27, not 28, his birthday is next month.
D.J.

I SEND MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO JESSE'S FAMILY AND FRIENDS , I WAS HONORED ENOUGH AS A FUTURE STRONGMAN TO MEET JESSE AND TALK WITH HIM. HE WAS A TRUE AMERICAN STRONGMAN. REST IN PEACE BROTHER , FOR THE STRENGTH WILL ALWAYS BE YOURS

With as much respect as this calls for, don't be silly. 99% of us didn't know the guy, and in the immortal words of OJ, "people die every day". He's famous, so speculation is fine in a public forum. Just as we could speculate about Falwell. Or talk about W's colon polyps.

Presumably, a toxicology report will come out in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, don't think Nancy Grace and the other news/entertainment shows won't be booking those same steroid, 'experts' in a few days.

The price of knowing someone famous is that, you have to share that person with the world.

Rest in peace Jesse.

No excuses! Just lift it!

I'm very sorry to hear this and my prayers are with his family and many friends. My wife works in Vascular Tracking at a hospital and I hear of heart attack deaths in the 20's, 30's and 40's more often than you would ever imagine; athlete or not. A percentage of the population is going to fall to heart attacks at a young age. It should remind us all that no matter how we live and work at our health, tomarrow is promised to no one. We should, like Jesse; make the most of the days we have. Live this day like it's your last one. Rest in peace Jesse!

I saw that cat on TV more than once, and as a fan of the sport, I really think he was the future. I hope his family reads all the nice stuff on here and realizes all the upward potential he had, besides all his already-impressive credentials. RIP bigman.

My thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

God Bless.

I just can't believe this has happened...I'm still in shock. Jesse was a good friend and such a nice guy. I'm so glad I got to spend time with him this year. He will always be remembered.

He was the older brother of my close personal friend and an inspiration to all the athletes who came out of Sequim like myself. He will be missed dearly. RIP Jesse, we love you.

unbelievable. I saw the post and i was so choked up, it truly made me sad. But i will remember him as a great strength athlete and a very strong person who gave it his all for our country in WSM. God bless. The future is uncertain and the end is always near.

i love you jesse and i'll be praying for your family

I had the opportunity to train with him a couple of years ago. He was a class act and a good person. Sorry to hear that this happened

I had the pleasure of knowing Jesse. He is a true world class athlete, but more importantly he is a world class person. Jesse wherever you are God Bless. You burned bright big man! My favorite thing you did was the lag clean and press and then stand with all the weight on one leg. Quite the cool stunt.

You have earned your place among the iron warriors of Valhalla.

BBB

R.I.P. Bro..

I'm truly sorry for the Marunde family. Jesse was way cool and off the hook. My deepest condolences to Callie and Dawson. I know life will be hard without him but he'd want you to be strong.

YAK and Family.

I hope the warm embrace, which is the love of friends and faith, comforts the family during this time of sorrow.

My condolances,

Jim

Thats just too bad. He seemed like a good dude. I am sure he will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Its a shame to lose such a good person, Jesse was a true good guy. I knew him from when I competed in strongman and he was one of the coolest people to talk to. Very smart, super athletic, and a kind soul. He will be missed!

Dru Patrick

very sorry to hear of Jesse's passing.

God bless

I hope after a tragedy like this lifters will start to realize how serious drug use can be. Amazingly, some people will still be in deninal becuase they don't want to think such a terrible thing can happen to them. If this death can help save only a few people from going down such a destructive path, it may have been worth it. Too bad there is not an easier way.

I knew Jesse for a brief time. I found him to be a gentlemen and very giving of his time and knowledge. My prayers go out his family and close friends.

May God comfort all who knew and loved Him,

27-year-old Sequim man dies after workout

Associated Press - July 26, 2007 2:15 PM ET

SEQUIM, Wash. (AP) - A 27-year-old Sequim (pronounced squim) man who finished second in the 2005 "World's Strongest Man" competition died after a workout.

Clallam County Coroner Deborah Kelly says Jesse Marunde (ma-RUN-dee) collapsed after working out last night and died.

The cause of death remains under investigation. An autopsy will be conducted over the next few days, and Kelly says it could take a month or more to release a final report.

KONP Radio in Port Angeles reports that friends and family say Marunde, who ran a gym with his wife, stopped his workout because he felt dizzy.

Marunde is survived by his wife, Callie, a baby the couple had about six weeks ago and a 9-year-old son from a previous marriage.

Marunde finished second in the 2005 "World's Strongest Man" competition, according to results posted on a Web site for the annual event.

good bay RIP

RIP Jesse

You will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

We in the powerlifting community send our condolences to Jesse's family and the entire Strongman community on this sad day.

No matter what the cause of death, the loss of this talented athlete is a loss for all the strength sports. It's especially sad and distressing that he died so young. Condolences to all his family and friends.

Friends don't let friends squat high.

My condolences to Jesse's family and friends. This is a truly moment for the "iron brotherhood" and for athletics, in general. I never met Jesse personally, but I can appreciate his physical abilities as well as his larger-than-life personality. He made watching strongman even more fun with his persona, and, from what I've heard from many others, he was both a gentleman and a true warrior. I will keep all those touched by his passing in my thoughts and prayers, and it is my sincerest hope that peace and healing will come to you all. I believe that so long as his memory and the impressions he so clearly made on so many remain with us, the spirit of Jesse continues on. May his memory serve to inspire others to reach beyond themselves, to aspire to the highest dreams, and to remember that all things are possible with discipline, with faith, and with courage.

God bless you all. My prayers go with you. Amen.

I meant to say, "...This is a truly sad moment"....

Won't be a toxicology report. Died of natural causes doesn't give the law enforcement any cause to force a toxicology test and the family could probably care less because it doesn't change the fact that he has left us.

Just because you don't know someone doesn't give you free liscense to be insensitive

My condolences go out as well. He will be missed by many. God Bless

I got this post off of The Anvil which is the NAS site. I guess it was on Marunde's forum, but I have not been able to get on there.

This was posted a little while ago on the Marunde Muscle Forum....such a tragedy......

Friends, we suffered a great loss in the strongman community last evening. The Sequim Crew was doing what they do. Training hard and particularly training Jesse for the WSM contest in Anaheim. He died quickly and painlessly.

The squat set was as follows:
230kg x 8
190kg x 8
150kg x 8
110kg x 8
70kg x 8
Followed immediately by:
600# tire flip
265# stone load
All of this was done with no rest between sets. Rack, pull, go
At the completion of these sets Jesse laid on his back, on the cold floor like normal. Breck and Sarge noticed that his breathing was laborious. Jesse became incoherent and stopped breathing. We administered cpr, called 911 and continued to resusitate until paramedics arrived. They set up the defibrillator, epinephrin, to no avail. He was worked on for over an hour between Breck, Sarge and the paramedics.

These are the facts as it happened. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We appreciate your support and prayers.

The Sequim Crew

The number of lifters and general population inspired by Jesse is countless. He touched so many people he didn't know, to say nothing of all of those lucky enough to have trained or competed with him.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and rather than letting the despair of this loss seep in, it is my sincere hope that we can all celebrate everything he gave us while he was with us.

Rest in peace Jesse.

Very, very sad.

I only met Jesse in person a couple of times, but I had regular communications with him.

I met Jesse at a strongman show, saw him at the Boise Fitness Expo, and later on at a bodybuilding show where he was doing an exhibition. Always a big smile, happy to see you again, and willing to help. He was proud of his son, who did an exhibition with him in April.

Condolences to his family. A great guy gone too soon. Any other comments at this time at both petty and disrespectful to his family. Give it a rest. LJM

My condolesences to Jesse Marunde. He had always seemed like a cool person to interact with.

To the man who wrote the article speculating steroids. This is his brother Robbie and he did not use steroids and the death was not steroids. He had an embolism which caused the massive Heart Attack. We as a family would appreciatte it if you all would remember Jesse for the Great Person he was and show some respect. Jesse loved the Strongmen Sport, the fans and our family. He was one of the most charismatic leaders I have ever known. He was a true sportsman. I looked up to him with the world and he was my hero. He will be greatly missed. So please, keep us in your prayers and DO NOT make false acusations, speculations or anything to the affect that is not positive and uplifting to the name of my older brother, best friend, father to Dawson and Jessica, Wife to Cali and Son to Mom Gigi, As well as leader and friend to the Strongman world. He truly loved you all and would realy want you to be going for your dreams and staying driven. God Bless---Please be Respectful

I seriously doubt this tragedy is due to steroids. I mean on his board in the main forum it says to discuss anything and everything "LEGAL" and I can't picture Jesse Marunde as a hypocrite :( rest in peace jesse!

I met him for the first time at the fitexpo. He was a cool cat and an amazing strongman competitor. You will be missed.

He sure put on one heck of show while he was around. Thanks Jesse you'll be missed.

Saw him compete in Boston a few years back. I am glad to see him while he was around. Times like this make you remember to get everything you can out of every day.

God bless the Marunde family.

Thanks Jon, after I posted my response...I regretted my lack of better judgement. I said what I said because I let that anonymous poster get to me because he wanted to vent on J.M. My bad.

As usual, no class at all from Jim Ray.

Very sad that we lost one of our great American Strongmen.

As usual, no facts, logic, or truth from Dan Lister.

Everything I have ever seen from Jesse has been A+. He seemed like a great man, and will be sorely missed. RIP Jesse.

Although, I will admit Robbie's post is a bit absurd. Asking for respect at this time is warranted, but lying to preserve an image is retarded.

Jesse was an amazing competitor, and nothing but complete respect should be given. However, to try and say he never touched any "supplements" is moronic. Lots of almost 300lb guys walking around with that low of a BF%??

C'mon, keep it about the respect... adding the other trash just shift things.

Wow, that's a shock. I remember watching him in WSM since I saw him. He was a great athlete. This is truly sad.

From what I saw and read of him, he was a stand up guy. Not to many around these days.

I feel for his relatives and friends. Its such a shock. I hope them the best.

I met Jesse for the first time at the FitExpo two years ago and have kept in touch with him over the last two years. This guy was a class act!! Due to some injuries over the last year he has MC a few strongman shows. At one of the events there was a young man who was way out classed in most of the events, but was giving 100% in each. Jesse took the time to pull him aside work with him prior to and after each event. You don’t see this allot in our sport especially from someone who is 27 old.
We may have lost a great Strongman, but more importantly we lost a great person!
RIP my Friend.

I exchanged emails w/ him once regarding Sarge's 100 rep squat routine. He was very nice and forthcoming. My sympathy goes out to his family. He seemed like a good guy. Too bad it wasn't Titus.

RIP JESSE

we had met Jesse a couple times and my entire family loved what he stood for. He took time to take several pictures with my 9 year old daughter Savannah and never complained. I my book he was a role model somebody who did care just because thats who he was.To find anyone to fill the void he will leave is impossible. People like Jesse are just born that way it doesn't come from a gym or from triing you are simiply born that way. on behalf of my family we will miss you often and remember you more. Thanks for making a difference!!

Oh, my God! What terrible news! Jesse was a class-A competitor and a fine person with a lot of character.

I spent quite some time on the m-m forum, Jesse was always, always, encouraging and positive and helpful. He was a friend to the sport, and to its competitors.

One consolation is that he went out fighting, doing what he loved to do.

R.I.P. Jesse

R.I.P Jesse, very sad

Good guy ;(

RIP

Greetings from Poland.

If the death was a result of drug use, we will hear about it. Let's not speculate.

Соболезную. Это действительно тяжёлая потеря. Пусть земля ему будет пухом.

Jesse,

I'll miss you bro, thanks for the talk in Church a few weeks ago. I'll see you again brother! As for Callie, Dawson and Jessica...you'll all be in my prayers.

This is a stupid thing to say. You canNOT screen for "aortic rupture potentials" whatever the f**k that is. The only thing an x-ray (chest x-ray) can do is HELP diagnose an aortic rupture in progress, or MAYBE see a dissecting aortic aneursym by seeing a widened mediastinum on x-ray. If I had a nickel for every time someone came into the office asking for some test one of you retards mention, I would have millions.

I've known Jesse since High School. We went to school together, our families went to church together... when I left Sequim he became like a big brother to my baby sister and was there for my mom during some of the toughest of times, for this there will never be enough thanks! I can say with out hesitation or doubt he was one of the finest men in the world and Earth is a lesser place without him here. Love and support from me to Callie, Gigi, Dawson, JJ, Bristol, Brady and Sabrina! I love you guys, thanks for always being so warm and loving!

Much Love,
Sarah

I'm a brazilian bodybuilding and I love watch the Strong and Powerlifting competitions...and the only words that I can say now is: I feel for relatives and friends. God bless your family.

Cany believe that i thought from the last couple of strongmen comps he was getting closer 2 taking the title thought this would be his yr 2. R.I.P thoughts go out 2 his wife who was his biggest support and fan that u could always here shouting encouragement 4 him at comps

I'm a 42 year old construction worker with my own company. I love jesse. I look up this evening to see what jesse was up to and doing for this years worlds strongman contest. I am in shock and truly sadden over jesse death. I will miss you. Much love to family and friends.

Jesse était fort pi jpense stai le meilleur des états-unis dans le strongman,j'aimais ça le regarder à tv dans l'émission d'homme fort,c'est plate qui sois mort:(

in english: (my english will maybe suck because im french) : Jesse was strong and i think it's was the best in the usa in the strongman,i was loving see him in the tv in the strongman show,it's sad that he is die:(

I work with a guy that did some strongman stuff in the past. He said many of them do "uppers" to make it through the workouts. He quit doing it because the drugs damaged his heart and he has to wear a monitor now. Is it worth it in the long run?
