Video of David Ricks' 749 Lb Squat

(updated to add another angle and second attempt video.)

Brad Madvig has uploaded video of 50-year-old David Ricks squatting 749 pounds yesterday at the NAPF Quest American Invitational at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Ricks (198) added a 473 pound bench press and 733 pound deadlift to total 1,956 pounds. That was good for the victory in the meet's middleweight division.

Second attempt of 733 pounds:

Ricks' 749 pound squat.

SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!

Anyone know any results from the benchpress?

The online result service is down it seems.

OR the competition is delayed.

Wow!! LOL, an enormous amount of weight... walked out... legal depth... all on the same video. In all seriousness, you are one hell of a motivator, Mr. Ricks. Here's to showing us how for many years to come.

remember, us internet judges cant judge depth from the front.

dude, that was awesome. great squat! loved every second of him gettin pumped up. congrats. for a second i thouht he was gonna sit on the floor, have a snack, then finish the lift

This is what squating is all about. No monolift,no briefs. no triple ply,no juice,no quarter squat. Just a real to life squat. That away Mr Ricks.

Dave really nice lifting congratulations.

Could you just congrats the man and shut the f*** up about everything else? Damn!! So sick of this anon hating post

Amazing lifter no doubt about it! I just wish he would learn to use his gear better. Damn Ricks could go near 2100 with his kind of strength. 446 raw bench at RUM and 473 in shirt at the Arnold? Never the less, awesome lifting.

All lifters please take note on how to squat! 50 years old, not even a 198lbs. full lifter yet and destroys it.
A few months ago he also won the Raw Unity!

That is how you roll

Great squat.

Although as I couldn't see the crease of the hips I cannoyt comment on the depth :)

You will never have to question Mr. Ricks depth. He squats the right way.

God Bless Superman Dave Ricks!!! I was again fortunate to have my dear friend Dave lift on the Atlantic Region team this year.

As you all can see from the video, this is just one of the many reasons we call him Superman. At 50-years young, Dave is still crushing kids half his age. He is an all-time PL immortal and he's getting stronger. More important, Dave is also a world-class human being. This time, I also had the opportunity to meet his family (Mom, Dad, brother). Now I can see where Dave gets it from as they were all of gentle spirit too.

His second attempt at 733 was a little harder than it should have been as he went too deep. When he came off the platform, we chatted and settled on 749 - a conservative increase based on how the 733 looked. As you can see from the video, Dave also wears his suits rather loose and the legs ride up his thighs. We tried pulling his suit down a little bit after the 733 to give him some extra "pop" on his third attempt. (As you can see from the video, the suit rode up again anyway.) Hindsight is often 20/20 and he definitely had more in the tank but 749 was the right call at that moment.

Dave always makes my job easy. We load the bar and he lifts it. Before the contest began, I jokingly told one of the other team's coaches that Dave was my secret weapon. They laughed and replied, "Secret weapon!?!?! Dave's no secret, he's been do this for decades." True that. I'll just call him my MVP then.

Dave finished a mere 7-pounds under his all-time PR total. If we'd had one more bench, he would have made it. On Dave's second BP his lockout was funky and he kind of bobbled it at the top. So we repeated his second attempt (474) on his third. That's what good lifters do - they come back and get it on a third. Lastly, Dave made a 716 DL at RUM3 one month ago. On Saturday, he finished with 733 DL in a suit. He doesn't get much out of his gear thus proving again how truly strong he is.

Maybe next time, we'll just have him wear his cape.

Congratulations again Dave on another outstanding performance.

Let me make the cape. He'll look like the black Elvis. LOL

Im thinking he was like James Brown. After that squat I was waiting for him to yell.. "I feel Good!"

Dave did 1818 raw at the Rum and I may be wrong but hisprior best suited was 1904 and at the Arnold he was 1956...... continuing to get better at 50 and giving this 48 yr old some inspiration.

I agree with the comment on gear..... if he is only getting 140 out of gear when he could be getting as much as 250 in all lifts...

Doesn't matter though, the man is a living legend who conitnues getting better!

Thanks for all the nice comments. I was kinda surprised how well I did at the Arnold. After moving to Georgia in Sept I had planned to take 6 months off from competitive lifting due to my new job and stuff. Then I got the invite to do the RUM in Oct and since I had not done a raw meet and it is easier to train for I took a chance.

Then in late November I committed myself to do the Arnold Quest and did not realize how close the two meets were together, so for an old guy I was in new training territory.

Ron Dues, Cathy Marksteiner, and Matt Gary were awesome as my coaches and I am blessed to having great folks like them helping me out.

I am still floored how well that 3rd squat went after a poorly executed 2nd attempt at 733. That 2nd attempt took some wind out of my sails. But my coaches said I went way too deep on my second. Also, a couple of weeks ago I had just got new squat shoes from Sherman and these have a bit of a heel and you have to sit back more. Sherman kept telling me to sit back...sit back during the meet.

Rick,

I wouldn't say you second was too deep. Take a look.

well done, david. you're one of the people i miss lifting with at ipf world masters....

technically you were even a "bit too deep" on this one but it's always better safe than sorry. :)

anyway a pleasure to see the video, someday maybe we'll be on a team together again. stay strong and well.

That is really great work. To follow up with this after the RUM at his age is just plain sick!

Lot's of trouble with set up. Re-racked and then stumbled but then kicked some butt with a beautiful squat. Anyone else would have missed this after spending so much energy with the set-up trouble. Awesome!

Wow, isn't it amazing that all the 'haters' and 'trolls' are strikingly absent when someone ACTUALLY hits depth on a squat. Great job David. I lifted in the MWs with you at Raw Unity and it was inspiring to watch you go at the weights. congratulations sir.

I wouldn't consider it "striking" at all considering that all the "haters and trolls" would rather have people squat like this all day long than to complain about a mile high squat.
