Joe Cappellino Breaks Mike Tuchscherer's Collegiate Record

Last Saturday, at the USAPL Northeast and Raw HS/Collegiate Powerlifting Championships in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Joe Cappellino (shw) bench pressed 584, 606 then 633 pounds to set a new USAPL Collegiate American Record. The press is also the heaviest in collegiate history, regardless of weight class. Trey Jewett (220) held the former mark at 628 pounds. It also broke his own USAPL New York Junior State Record and ranks him twelfth on the Powerlifting Watch Lifter Rankings.

Cappellino added a 749 pound squat and a 650 pound deadlift to set the USAPL Collegiate American Record with a 2,033 pound total. Like his bench press, the total is the largest in collegiate history, beating Michael Tuchscherer’s (275) 2,006 pound record. It also broke Cappellino's own New York Junior State Record and ranks him eleventh on the Lifter Rankings.

Cappellino is now gearing up for the 2010 USAPL Collegiate Nationals in Disney World.

Nice work. That squat was not only deep, but he stayed in the hole so long he could've taken a nap with the bar down there. The pause on the bench was crazy long.

Mike, I was in Tampa, Florida announcing the RAW UNITY MEET!!!! Had a great time. Congrats to all the lifters at the USAPL HS/Collegiate meet.

Joe you SAVAGE !!!

Great work !!!

Wow! Nice work!

It is amazing when someone squats legal depth, you still can tell from a distance!

How did he beat Mike T.'s record when Joe Cappenllino is a heavyweight and Mike is a 275lber?

For biggest collegiate total in USAPL history. Mike T still has the 275 record but not the highest.

Nice lifting Joe.

I'm old enough to remember Doug Furnas taking the 1983 Collegiate Nats at 275 with SQ 881, BP 502, DL 760 for a 2143 total and he was just getting started. The 881 was effortless as he went on to put up 981 at the Senior Nationals the year after that.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the props. David, it really is a shame those numbers aren't recorded. Im sure Doug did those with basically no gear. Im hoping to get my total up to somewhere around there. The bench has really been my focus recently because I had a hamstring pull after Thanksgiving that took almost 6 weeks to heal. I didn't get alot of time to train for this regarding squat and dead. Im glad I was still able to get the total record and finally go over 2,000. Ive only been PLing for about two years so hopefully I can keep improving. Thanks again... Joe C

Hey Joe,

I am thrilled you got the point I was trying to make. You are going to go far. I'm pretty sure Doug had on a first generation Inzer suit and no one had ever tried a bench shirt in that day and age. His legs were so damn big he had to have the suit legs pulled all the way up like Karowski did. I don't want to try and say he was drug tested since that hadn't started yet either. I didn't check it out yet but I bet these records are still recorded at the USPF site.

yo!!!!!!! congrats man!!!! thats nuts!!!!! I have to def come down and watch you soon! makes me feel like a weekling!
