Margaret Kirkland Squats All-Time Record

Margaret Kirkland (114) squatted an all-time record on Saturday at the APF Southern States in Jacksonville, Florida. Kirkland squatted 518 pounds to overtake the former mark of 512 pounds by Russia's Olesia Lafina.

Kirkland was just 11 pounds off Lafina's all-time total record. Her 1,146 pound total ranks her first on the Lifter Rankings. It included a 231 pound bench press and 396 pound deadlift.

I was there for Lafina's squat and this isn't even in the same world as her squat. She is a midget and she still moved it 10x as far as that!

You are kidding me, right?

Hearty congrats Margaret!

Give it a break anon and quit annoying people, or at least identify your self.

Congratulation to Margaret for her strong attempt. Shame on the judges.

Is it going to take An Act Of Congress to put an end to "The Horrific Squat Judgeing" in all of The Pro-Monolift Lifting Federations? What is wrong with squatting to legal depth with less weight anyway? This is a a bigger problem than Steroids in Baseball! Someone, Anyone, please Squat Deep! Mike.

Why are federations like the APF still in business? Seriously, the squat depth in the video was clearly high -- at best a half squat! You can NOT compare Kirkland to Lafina -- There is NO comparison. How can the sport of powerlifting be taken seriously with nonsense and foolishness of this nature.

There is a simple solution to this problem. Put Margaret and Olesia in the octagon and let them battle it out for the record. At least then someone might give a shit about powerlifting.

As a WPC lifter this makes me sad, and i blame the judges and i blame the gear. The gear has gotten so extreme now that with a tight multiplysuit and briefs, getting depth is next to impossible. If this was done at WPC-Worlds this year, it would have gotten 3reds. This makes me glad im just gonna do rawmeets for a couple of years now. Strong lifting by Kirkland though.

I love the sport and know Margaret personally and like her as a person but that was above borderline. When it's close you give it to the lifter but that was just to high to give it to her. Gear has nothing to do with getting depth, it's up to the lifter. I do not believe in "convincingly deep" but get it there. This is a judging issue that will continue to be adrressed, it's come a long way and is getting better but there is still alot of work to do! Lifters will only squat as deep as needed, no more no less!

With that I will say congrats for a woman her age to continue in this sport in multiple weight classes and do well on all level is amazing...

Nice squat Margaret! F*ck everyone that thinks other wise.

unbelieavable.

Wow, after Dave Hoff proved doubters wrong recently - and showed that little tiny videos shot at a bad angle are not a substitute for being there in person - I figured maybe people would be less quick to judge the judges.

I think Margaret is remarkable, and this was a fantastic effort. Three judges were in position to view the lift. I'm not second-guessing them, and I'm giving Margaret all the credit in the world for even considering an attempt at that much weight. A powerful woman by any standard. Good for her, I say.

MARGRET,NICE JOB W/ THE HUGE SQUAT.AS ALWAYS A CLASS ACT.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND TRAIN HARD.BOB ANNA AND ANTHONY.

Congratulations to The Newest Member of The A.P.F. "Mile High Club"! What shame is there in squatting 451 6 Inches Deeper? For the Love of God, please squat deep! Mike.

knock it all you want internet judges, but it passed in the real judges head, and you cant take that away. Obviously it was good enough for them and if its good enough for them its good enough for me. Sadly they wont give me the same leeway as an amateur in a local meet.....

Who is Michael White and why are you so pissed off?

Resume please?

Do you have a dog in this race?

We agree that it needs to be cleaned up but you seem to take alot of offense to this one squat.
Margaret is a clssy person and deserves more respect that hateful "mile high club" B.S. you spew and for your knowledge she has already squatted that at the WPC Worlds(i think that was the meet) with no problem getting it passed.

You can disagree without being disrespectful to a world class lifter who is good for the sport. Every lifter gets a gift every so often in every federation(none are immune), that is not the lifters fault.

I was offended by people squatting in suits made from old military humvees long before I had issue with them squatting to depth. Even if it was to depth, the suits destroy all claims of "I squatted ####".

I was the next lifter after Margaret on the last squat attempt at this meet. From the side, the squat looked to me to be very close to parallel. I think the lift could have gone either way, much like Brian Schwab's last attempt squat. This video is a very bad angle to judge depth. You cannot judge depth properly from the front, much less from the right front and slightly downward. The angle of the video camera automatically gives a view that will appear higher than what it is in reality and sitting in the judge's chair. With a very wide stance like Margaret has it appears that much higher from this kind of angle.

Anyways, it was nice to meet you Margaret, and I have to say that I was impressed by the kind of weight you lifted at only 114lbs.

Guys lets cut the bullshit. Its one thing when people attack the lifter themselves when a video comes out, but if anyone thinks that was a good squat by powerlifting defintions is wrong.

Before I resume, my name is Jason Colenzo and have no issues posting my name in reference to this. You can find some of my meet results on ironasylumgym.com. My contest bests are 415 squat, 235 bench, and 530 deadlift, all raw. Nothing impressive I know, but I'm just puttin that out there.

I've read about Margaret and think shes extremely strong and from what people have written is a fantastic woman. With that being said, that squat was high. Plain and simple it was high. You don't need to be a 1000lb squatter to accurately judge a squat.

The people who have to come to the rescue of every lifter who gets told their squat is high is also annoying as fuck. I thought people were supposed to constructively criticize peoples lifts both in the gym and in the meets. If I fuck up on depth in training I want my training partner to tell me I missed depth and to do it again so it counts for somethin. I don't wanna do a half squat and have my training partner be like "OH GEE GOLLY AWESOME SQUAT!! FUCK ALL THE HATERZZZ"

That gets me nowhere, and when people do it in competitions it gets them nowhere. You have to tell it like it is or else this sport is gonna continue to run around with its head chopped off with a bunch of lifters bitching at each other. It'll continue to be a sliding scale of what is parallel, and it needs to stop.

no way you can judge depth from a shaky camera run by whoever was screaming like that....... nor can you judge depth from the front or from up that high, that's why judges are in chairs and only the side judges call depth

with that said...... that was a hell of a squat!!!! NICE JOB!

Now with more " shut up and lift"

I am honored to be not just a friend of Margaret, but have the pleasure of training with her at Muscle Works Gym in Bradenton, FL. For ALL you haters out there, unless you were standing on the side of the mono-lift, you really should not make a comment. I was.....and others.....were on the side and it looked good to us. (which included the judges.....).

Margaret,
You are an incredible lifter, don't let someone's stupidity bring you down. Half these posters were not there, they did not see what we did, you got the lift and you were judged for that lift.....WHICH WAS GOOD!!!

SO......on that note......All you haters, Keep hating, that is what fuels us to keep lifting what we lift.... DRUG-FREE!! BITCHES!!

all these haters that are looking at a bad camera angle for their judging probably were the ones that said you can't judge height from the front. and also are the ones that thing the camera angle doesn't effect strikes and balls. next time you little winey ass bitches complain about a lift at least be at the meet and see the lift first hand.and i also train with margaret in florida and watched her train for this lift for over a year. she deserves the lift not only because she worked for it but because it was a good lift.
great job by a great representative of the sport and to be drug free is AWESOME!!!!!

i too was there at the meet competing and saw it from the side, the squat easily hit depth

congrats!

Margret great job with your lifting. As for the rest of you, i personnally have judged more meets than most of you combined and i was standing on the side behind the ref and it was good to me. When you want to step up and judge meets and sit in that chair all day be my guest and volunteer. Otherwise shut up and train.

GOOD squat!

Congratulations to Margaret Kirkland!

The biggest squat in history in her weight class!

If you can beat her record go on and do it!

This was an exciting meet too!

As for Margaret's squat I say wholeheartedly congratulations a job well done. Don't like it? Tough cookies! Lift in another fed, there are only 9832475 to chose from.

I'd say that Dave did a damn fine job of showing any doubters that he's a force and a clean lifter.

Squat: 1,025
Bench: 785
DL: 790
Total: 2,600
Best heavyweight at Cell Block.

Just like Margaret, Dave might have been judged on the internet on the basis of a video shot at an angle that no judge would ever consider reliable. I'll go with the eyewitnesses every time: Margaret and Dave are, to me, the kind of lifters that any fed would be proud to have, and any aspiring competitor would do well to emulate.

Just my opinion, of course. But I'd love to hear how a 21 year old guy posting a 2,600 pound total is a "disgrace". I'll choose to call him "inspiring" instead, and I'll use the same term for Margaret.

Hella strong? Yes. Caught cheating? Yes. Not to mention 785 vs 810 with the 2 board in... But enough of this nonsense this isn't about Dave or anyone but Margaret's massive squat!

She's strong. No doubt about that. But that was high.

I thought the squat was high but I wasnt there to see it and arent those canvas suits really thick meaning if your looking atthe crease in the hip u cant really judge parallel.Just a thought.

At first look, this does look high but it is always hard to judge depth from the front. And I do think gear makes it even harder to judge depth from the front. I took a second look and paused the video. After taking another look, it definitely appears the right side of the video is below depth but hard to tell on the left side. Point being that don't judge depth from the front view. If you are, you obviously haven't ever judged a meet.

Good squats Margaret!!!

Lets agree you cannot call depth with this shakey, poor quality camera angle. Would you want to be judged by this video?
Also, how is it some one can question her depth when the spotters hands are covering her hips? You can debate all day about what you THINK you could of seen without the spotters hands, but unless you have xray vision, or you are in the judges seat your wasting space here. The biggest problem in judging the squat today is lifters stances are wider. Spotters are out farther and back spotters are covering the angle the side judges are trying to look through. As a judge, If I can not see because of the obstruction, I get out of my chair. If it's still obstructed I HAVE to give the lifter the benefit of the doubt. This may be the case here. I don't know. Next time bloggers write what you do know not what you may think you know. These type of rants help know one.

Well, high or not still impressive! Beats the heck out of this 148ers squat I know that! LOL
Congrats Margaret!

Simple fix: Put the camera on the side at knee level!!!

I have had the honor to know and train with Margaret for many years. I have been a lifter for over 13 years, and I can honestly say that the strongest, toughest, and most talented powerlifter that I have ever seen is Margaret Kirkland (A WOMAN). This video has raised alot of suspicion of whether or not this was a clean lift. I can tell you first hand, because I was there that it was a clean lift. Margaret Kirkland is an incredible lifter, and also an amazing person who certainly deserves much better than these rude backhanded comments that have been posted about her and the APF/AAPF. I have no doubt that some of these comments were posted by people who are twice as heavy as Margaret, but can't lift half the weight that she can :):):) If you didn't like this video of her than keep watching. Knowing Margaret, I can promise you that she will continue to train hard, lift harder, compete, break records, and show everyone that anyone can succeed in this sport (man or woman) if they work hard enough at it. Margaret has not only amazed me, but she has also inspired me as well. I credit alot of my accomplishments to her, and the example that she has set. I would also like to add that all of Margaret's accomplishments have been made through COMPLETELY DRUG FREE TRAINING!!! Michael Allocco.

She is Strong - but the squat was high. If this is judged as a valid lift then you must be either blind or you think the rules should be changed. If this is real then an APF SHW should be squating 2000 pounds! If records are tainted by bogus lifts the entire sport becomes a joke. Either wake up to face the reality that this is a bogus lift or change the rules for everyone.

I've been lifting with the crew at Muscle Works for just a few months now and have come too realize the quality of the people I am surrounded by.Margaret and I trained together for this meet[AN HONORE IN I'TS SELF]and I assure you there is nobody more critical of her technique or open to advice than her and she's been training longer and harder than most.I will not comment on this video but to say to some peoples disbelief,"POWERLIFTING IS A TEAM SPORT".The sooner people understand and embrace this concept the better of this sport will be for it.And by the way,I was just behind the right judge at floor level observing depth, all I can say is,you don't get to see something that special very often.

the squat may have been high, but she is strong. the deadlift number itself proves that. I would love to see her lift in uspf or usapl.

I WAS PRESENT TO SEE THIS LIFT-IT MET ALL REQUIREMENTS FOR A PASSING LIFT. THE VIDEO WAS SHOT FROM AN ANGLE FROM WHICH DEPTH CANNOT ACCURATELY BE JUDGED. THE OFFICIALS WERE NOT PASSING BAD SQUATS THAT DAY. IHATE TO HEAR CRYBABIES CARRYING ON BECAUSE THEY ARE SO JEALOUS AND ENVIOUS OF A 46 YEAR OLD WOMAN WHO CAN SQUAT OVER 4.5 TIMES BODYWEIGHT.PLEASE GROW UP

Margaret Kirkland is an exemplary person. She hails from five generations of professional violinists and herself plays 1st violin in the community orchestra. She is a wife and mother. She is a dentist. She snow-skiis, water-skiis, rides bicycle, runs, and plays tennis. Oh, she also does powerlifting. Her dad had her squatting when she was 4 years old, squatting 65lb's at age 4 to good depth I might add. She doesn't brag about herself.
Thanks to those of you who complemented Margaret's recent 518lb squat weighing in at 114lb's. I was there. It was an excellent squat in all aspects, including depth.
I don't criticize anyone else's federation and we have lifted in quite a few of them. But, frankly,
some of you critical arrogants are wearing thin. So you think the deepest squat is the best squat?! May I remind you that a homerun is a homerun whether the ball clears the fence by 6" or 6 yards. And the refs only give you 6 points whether you cross the goal line 6" or 6 yards ahead of the defense.
Now for you arrogants who brag about your stupendous depth and your squats out of a rack (no monolift for you prideful grunts), I have an idea. Why use a rack at all? Just go ahead pick the weight up yourself, put it on your own back, and squat it. I'll applaud loudly. Any why settle with getting your butt close to the floor?! You might touch the dirty floor. Why don't you squat over a pit so you can go lower than floor level?!
J. Hibler said it best: the squat "met all requirements for a passing lift." And, wallah, 3 white lights!
Now, if you like YOUR federation, I like it too.
Congratulations on your choice. We lift primarily AAPF and APF for several reasons: 1. a viable federation hosting many meets with many in Florida, 2. outstanding athletes and genuinely nice people, 3. consistently fair judging with breaking parallel one of the criteria for a legal squat, 4. tight, no-nonsense record keeping and rules enforcement by Amy Jackson and the other officials.

ok so first off, i want to start this off with FUCK ALL THE HATERS.

but on another note, you dont know my mom. and if you did, i guarentee half of this shit wouldnt be coming out of you haters mouths. because she is the most amazing, selfless, hardworking person ive ever came across in my life, not just cause shes a great other either.

second of all, she works her ass off, EVERYDAY she goes to work allll day long then comes home to change and goes to the gym allll night long. SHE WORKS HER ASS OFF. now those of you who decide to lift in USPL or USAPL, where you have to squat your ass to touch your ankles ALL THE POWER TO YA! but my mom doesnt lift in those federations. she mostly lifts in AAPF/APF, and in those federations your ass only has to go a hair below parallel. so if you have a problem with the squat, and you feel it was "unfairly" judged, its because in YOURRRRR federation it would have been illegal! but in the federations SHEEE lifts in, its perfectly legal! so if you have such a problem, why dont you stop the shit talking and switch federations mhhh?

id be careful what you shit talkers post on her too. because shes the best in the world ;) so she bestfriends with the other bests in the world ;) MIGHTTTT wanna watch ya back, just a suggestion.
cause we willll find you :))))

and to all the "anonymous", grow some fucking balls. seriosuly if your gunna talk the shit, atleast identify yourself and dont be a pussy. ESPECIALLLLYYY when your trying to call someone else out.

one more word of advice to all the hatersss, those who work the hardest, are the best. so instead of sittin here talkin shit because your so jealous, get your ass in the gym and maybe you could be HALFFFF the person my mom is.

to all the non-haters, im sorry about the profanity. these stupid people just erk my nerves.
