Raw United to Pay Entry Fees for RUM Team

RAW United President Spero Tshontikidis has announced that his federation will pay the entry fees for lifters who represent the federation at the 2010 Raw Unity Meet. For the first time, the meet will feature a team competition between federations.

At present, Kathleen Audet, Cathy Cox, Amanda Graham, Samantha Shores, Michael Francis, Zied Hichri, Eric Talmant and Daniel Tinajero will represent RAW United.

Tshontikidis says that it is possible that Leslie Kutner, Taylar Stallings, Bob Benedix, Tony Conyers, Rolando Manso and Beau Moore will also join the team.

RAW United team lifters will also receive a team shirt.

The Raw Unity Meet will take place on January 30-31 in Tampa, Florida.

Sorry but I don't get it. How can lifters who lift primarily in federations other than Raw United be on the team roster?

This is not a true test of who has the best federation team. Some of the lifters named do not even appear on the results of Raw United meets.

No offense meant but it looks like Spero is buying team members by paying their entry fee's to assure his federation has the number one team.

The Technical Secretary, along with the meet director and scorers/time keepers will verify that each lifter is representing the proper federation. Each lifter will have to have competed in their chosen federation within the last year.

It will be done by the book.

What lifters didnot lift with them?

Anon-- You are confusing the RUM=Raw Unity Meet with Raw United.

The RUM is not a federation, it's a contest held once a year.

Raw United is Spero's federation.

RUM is not under any federation's umbrella.

The team contest will be comprised of multiple team federations including but not limited to the Raw United Federation.

Here's the rule:

"Each of the lifters competing will represent the federation in which they achieved their qualifying total. If a lifter hit the qualifying total in multiple federations or received a special invite, the lifter will choose which federation they would like to represent."

All of the above lifters have lifted in Raw United Meets.

I think that Eric's got a great promotion going with the RUM competition.

That being said I don't like the "team" concept in powerlifting unless it's a legit worlds match, like the IPF Worlds.

Inside one's own country, powerlifting should be about the individual, who relies on and thanks their training partners and/or coaches, but who lifts ultimately to represent themselves.

The team trophy is usually just a motivator to get a gym to send a whole bunch of lifters. Maybe I'm wrong in this case, as Eric's got qualifying #s, but since each federation isn't sending ALL of their very best lifters it kinda defeats the team testing purpose doesn't it?

There is no team trophy.

I think that if the president of a federation- especially in this economy-would like to sponsor and support his best lifters by paying their entry fees; then that is a great thing!

I completely agree with Eric, I think this is an awesome gesture from Spero.

Not true. Every single one of them has competed in a RAW United meet. Nearly all are regulars.
