Bill Gillespie Claims Over 50 Record

Just a couple of weeks after Roger Ryan pushed the all-time over-50 bench press mark up to 749 pounds, Bill Gillespie, who turned 50 in September, claimed the record from Ryan. Gillespie pressed 755 pounds at last week's WABDL World Bench Press and Deadlift Championships in Reno, Nevada. Gillespie opened with a good lift of 733 pounds before finishing with a miss at 777 pounds.

Ryan also competed at the WABDL Worlds. He missed three attempts at 705 pounds on Thursday, competing in the M54-60 class. Then he came back to compete in the open class on Saturday, where once again, 705 proved a stumbling block. He ended the day with a 661 pound press.

Congrats Big Bill! Watching these two go at it back and forth for the top >50 bench is going to be fun...when are you two going to do a meet with squats in it so I'll have a chance! LOL! Continued good luck and success to both of you!

Way to go Bill ! Bill's got a much better strength-claim-to-fame too with his professional background of having coached with the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Huskies. Now I think he's over running the whole strength & conditioning program at Liberty. Bill also spent time on the platform as a three lift competitor. I'm glad that he's got the biggest shirt bench in the Over 50 age group.

Stay Strong,
Sean

You just can't pass up an opportunity to be a jerk to someone else, can you? And I'm sure your head is so far up your own rear that you don't even know you are doing it.

I'm not being a jerk to "someone else". I'm applauding a very well deserving Bill Gillespie for yet another impressive strength accomplishment.

If someone less deserving of strength sports recognition gets butt hurt over not being a legit # 1 then they need to learn to deal with it. By 50+ years of age an athlete's maturity level should be high enough to realise that their world crushing days either never happened or are behind them. Gillespie's a high achiever academically, professionally and competively.

Stay Strong,

Katterle, evidently you didn't learn anything by being fired by HOP. You would be much better off keeping your hypocritical views to yourself.

I didn't get fired from HOP Roger.

Glad to see a legit strength athlete and strength coach take your b.s. claim to fame and squash it. I'll look for you to compete at the next hometown white light fest to get your amazing paper champion certificate back so you can keep your self congratulatory website up and running.

Bill is a great strength athlete and strength coach, I agree. He beat my record by 2.5Kg. That's hardly a "squash". Katterle, someday maybe you can get on the platform and put some weights in your hands instead of a microphone. I'd personally like to see what you can do since you run you mouth so much.

Bill always impresses me. I can't believe that he is the strongest man over 50.

I first learned of bill editing a video of him talking about what supplements he takes and how he as always been drug free.

I got a kick out of Bill making this video. Because he says that at every powerlifting event that he goes to he runs out and asks them to drug test him so that he can show that he has nothing to hide.

The video also shows Bill Gillespie bench pressing 804 pounds. It is an awesome video. If interested you can see it on my blog.

Congrats on the monster lift Bill!
