Texas high school junior Lorenzo Barnes (shw) squatted 800 pounds on Saturday at the THSPA Coyote Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas. Barnes, who competes for Burkburnet High School, added a 450 pound bench press and 550 pound deadlift to total 1,800 pounds.

The USAPL Teen 16-17 American Record squat of 804 pounds was set in 1990 by Jason Wisner.

Here is video of Barnes' squat:

GREAT job! Strong squat! Hopefully he will continue powerlifting.

Side note: the USAPL record was set without knee wraps.

I think he has a good shot at breaking it.

wow

Nice squat, looked very fast. Well done Lorenzo

Is the THSPA a drug tested federation? What are the rules on gear? I really have no clue what their rules are.
Thanks to anyone who knows and can provide any additional info. on them.

THSPA is the Texas High School division of the USAPL...they follow the same rules and drug testing protocol as the USAPL.

Dayum ! The next Mark Henry ? Wicked future ahead of this "Human Eclipse"

Great lift! Hopefully we see more of this kid in the years ahead.

Congrats on a huge record! You should feel very proud that looked like a good solid low squat nice job keep up the hard work looks like many many records are ahead of you. Again congrats. Ken Ufford

Awesome, Lorenzo. Kudos to your coach, too.

THSPA is not drug tested. It is the high school federation of Texas and operates by itself. It is not affiliated with USAPL. The strongest teenage lifters in the world can be found at the THSPA state meet each year.

Curt

Damn he could be the next Marc Henry.

Curt,

the strongest teen lifters in the world are at the IPF junior worlds, you know that.

Great lifting - keep up the hard work!

Top to bottom. The THSPA state meet has just as much talent as the Sub-Junior worlds. Myself and others are currently working hard to get the best lifters from Texas to junior worlds in Brazil. If we can do this, the rest of the world and the American records have no chance.

THSPA is the Texas High School Powerlifting Federation. It is not a UIL sport yet, but still closely governed. It is NOT affiliated with USAPL in any way.
The students are subject to random drug testing, following the drug testing rules that all schools in Texas have to follow concerning any extracurricular activity. It doesn't follow USAPL drug testing protocol.

Curt: since it's extracurricular, the athletes are subject to random testing at their school. (I forgot to put my name on the post in response to d.m., but you and I said the same thing!!)

Curt

Jim, when I competed in THSPA ('98-'01), their rule book was similar to that of the USPF (regarding equipment and rules of performance). Has the rule book gone to something closer to the USAPL? I was never tested at any of my meets, nor do I recall anyone else being tested.

drugs or not, 800 as a teen, cant anyone just be like wow that was an amazing feet of strength?

Actually, it's a mix, but pretty close to USAPL rules. The drug testing is a requirement set up by schools for extracurricular activities. It's not mandated by law yet, but most schools are doing it for ALL extracurricular activities (FB, BB, even band, drama, and cheerleading).
The rulebook is a mix: they are now allowed to use 2.5 meter wraps, but cannot wear briefs under the suits. Stuff like that.

Exactly.

this is joe walton, so no one can be assy about me being anonymous. i was amazed by this comment

i would love to see some results, if one state has that much talent that would be insane, especially after seeing a russian at 125kg total 940kg with 3 squats and his opening bench and deadlift, this guy was so far ahead he didnt even bother taking his other lifts.

and strong lift.

This kid is just a FREAK! That was an amazing squat. Although I've never been to any THSPA meets, I've seen lots of the results online, and they have much more talent where this kid came from. They must have something in the water down in Texas. And as for the rules, the way I understand it is that it is essentially USPF/USAPL rules, all single ply, no canvas or denim shirts or suits. However, the 2.5 Meter wraps must be new.

he should have just done 805, and got the record, because that was smooth

Congrats from the ICG in Canton, Ohio. Well done.

Was the lifter a Junior or Sub? The sub-junior WR at 125 is 890.

His 800 would not have been a USAPL record as they do not sanction THSPA. I know that at least year's USAPL HS Nats a boy finished 3rd and said he got 5th at the TX state meet. I have heard that there are 10,000 members of the THSPA. My hope is that this year many of those kids will comete in a USAPL meet and get qualified for the USAPL HS Nats as they will be in TX. I do expect a huge turnout and a huge amount of depth this year. Maybe i will see him there.

I was told by a coach from TX that they squat deep, but not as deep as they do at USAPL HS nats. I also beleive their gear is basically 1 ply like the USAPL. I was todl they used the USPF test for refs from the 80's and 90's.

Alex,
If they squat DEEP, the why would they have to squat DEEPER at the High School Nationals? Isn't DEEP, DEEP?

Awesome lifting!

just the clear things up a bit they are drug tested, they do allow 2.5m wraps, single ply gear, elbow sleeves and knee sleeves are allowed, and they do allow briefs under the suit.

Joe,

The Russian you're speaking of was a junior lifter. Not a sub-junior. He was 23 yrs old. The THSPA web site does not have the state results from the past state meets right now. It was just redone. But, I know you can find the results in old PLUSA if you dig a bit. I'm sure you will find it worth the time to look. There are however, plenty of meet results up on that page. Again, the talent pool is deeper than anybody realizes. I'll give you a few examples of lifters that we took from Texas to USAPL teen/juniors last year.
Jimmy Lawrence 1184 total at 123.
Stephen Rios 1383 total at 148
Landre Lee 1686 total at 198
BK Scott 1653 total at 242
Ty Cloe 1791 total at 275 He also broke the IPF Sub-junior world record at worlds in Africa.

These 5 guys are the best that we could bring to nationals. Get ready for more this year. Just a taste of what Texas has to offer.

Curt

He was handled by one Mike Aksew it appears. A 1,000 squatter in his day.
Very nice aquat.

I judged a THSP meet last weekend and had a 148er triple his body weight in the squat and dead and just missed a double bw in the bench. The talent is very deeep.

Conrats Lorzeno! A good strong Squat.

WOW...That's very impressive for a teenager. That kid has a bright future in powerlifting if he can stay healthy.

Chip Martin

I judge in the THSPA and a state record can only be set at the state meet. If a lifter is suspected of using illegal substances they can be tested at the state meet.

Im his mama... If test him they'll only find gravy, fried chicken, greens, red beans , bacon grease, fried catfish, smothered potatoes, and all the sweet tea he can drink.

Seriously, Lorenzo is dedicated to working out and loves testing himself. He set a goal to squat 800 at the state meet but, as you can see, he's always been an over achiever.

That is one giant kid.
Nice Squat!

You can keep track of ALL the state run meets on a weekly basis, region by region, including regionals and the State meet.

Lloyd wrote:

Lloyd: They won't test at the meet; it violates the drug testing protocol set up by TEA and the schools. Plus, the meet director and fed don't have the $$ to run that part.

They are DRUG TESTED AT SCHOOL-RANDOMLY. This is a TEA (Texas Education Agency)mandate for ALL extracurricular activities. They are not tested at the meet.
Elbow and knee sleeves are not allowed-at all. The only time they allow a cast or support is if the person has an injury, and then it has to meet specifications and must be checked.
Briefs are NOT allowed-at any level at all.

The rule book is at www.thspa.us Check it out.

Your wrong! 2m wraps, no elbow or knee sleeves, and briefs are allowed.

Curt is right-- the talent pool is deep in Texas. Obviously, if most of our talented athletes did not play college and professional sports and we had 300,000 competitive powerlifters instead of 10,000 to 15,000, the USA would do much better on the international level.

Jim V,
It really is pointless to try to debate with these people abotu drugs, gear, etc...If someone can lift more than them then there must be some other reason than that the bastard is just one stron SOB, end of story. It is pathetic to imagine that they go through life thinking that the reasons that others have, do and achieve more than they do is because of cheating.
My son, who is just built perfectly for powerlifitng at 5'3" squatted 495 for multiple reps at 16 and everyone accused this kid of juicing. The only thing that that kid was eating was meat, potatoes and top damn ramen.
This nonsense will never stop!

Wow that kid is big and strong! I do wonder though why only a 550 deadlift? Again, he is unreal strong but especially with a closer stance and single ply suit in the squat, I would think that would translate over to a bigger deadlift? Maybe he had an off day, or only pulled what he needed to win the meet? Just curious, not ripping on the kid.

joe walton again, met landra and ty (still have no idea why hes called that) and they were a good laugh. didnt realise he was sub junior, only just realised it said teen, so tell him to stop messing around and go to the worlds, the world records only around 350 he'd smash it.

wow jus checked out the website, that is one active organisation, the number of lifters and competitions is fantastic, shame we dont have anything like that in great britain.
joe walton

LMAO at his super human strength.

....still LOL. I just can't get over it. Dude, that's CRAZY CRAZY strong!!!!

Putt Houston.... now with more Bom Chicka Wahwahhhhhh

i lift on the same team as him and is one of his best friends and hes 100% natural
he won state as a sophomore by 5 lbs beating a senior who had a full ride to play football for oklahoma state university.
if you question his deadlift he can deadlift 600 that was his opener he hitched 580 and 610
he can also can bench 500lbs he opened up with 450 and 475 and 490 hit the rack on the way up so they red lighted it so yeah

I personally know Lorenzo and he is a great kid. He trains hard every day, he is dedicated and he is a Christian boy. He eats healthy and trains hard and was trained by Mike Askew last year. Lorenzo is a great example of what good Genes, Hard work, dedication and loving Christ can accomplish! WE LOVE THIS YOUNG MAN and so does everyone who KNows him!
Way to Go Lorenzo!

I LOVE AMERICA

At least hes not a chicken

Thspa is a drug-tested federation. And yes they do follow USAPL guide lines. The problem is, is that drug testing is done by walking through a line and randomly grabbing people.
